 Every argument that can be made for showing plane type. Can be applyed to variants. The 109 series is so different. It is a planeset in its self.

 I would much rather see G-10 or F-4 over the range then 109. It might as well say, german plane take a guess. This is to much advantage over Nik,s, 205,s and such

It is a big advantage. I fly the G6 sometimes and I know that people are treating me like I am in a G10...Its an advantage.
Spit and Corsair get same advantage though.

 One of the big choices we make, over and over, is do I turn with this guy, or extend. Its flip a coin with a lot of the planes in the planeset. Computer graphics just arent good enough, yet, to make a plane out to that detail.

Each plane type should only be given away when when its profile is significantly different from its other variants, so the only thing I really think is unfair in current plane bogey designation is the way it is given away that it is a Macchi 202 or 205 I am fighting against.
These two types were so similar that it were near impossible for pilots to tell the precise type from even short distance, so maybe they should both be put as simply 'Macchi'?

Maybe when the Macchi 200 will be introduced it should be given individual designation? On the other hand it looks so much different from the other two that players should be able to tell its type manually from good distance.

[edit] We really have an advantage over the real pilots as we know exactly what colours each type are painted in. If only a little time is spent on studying the 109's for example you can quickly learn how each is unique in its paint. Things to note are fuselage band, yellow under nose, wing and rudder and propellar art. Easiest to tell apart are of course the G2 with its blue von Rosen's Crosses.

But when you finally see my blue von Rosen crosses, you're already hanging in your chute.    

I agree with Snefens on this.  There's no way you could distinguish between an F-4 and a G-10 from more than 50yds away in a furball.  Same thing with the Macchis.
