Nvidia-vs-ATI Radeon ???
« on: June 30, 2002, 06:17:24 PM »
I keep hearing of people getting much higher frame rates than I do running Nvidia vid cards.  I have a Athlon 2000xp with 512 ram and an ati radeon 7000 64 mb vid card.  I run the game in 800x600 to get an average of 37 frames...bounces sometimes to 70 plus frames.  Can I get a higher frame rate so I can run the game at higher resolutions?

Gonzo, the 7000 is not the fastest kid on the block.  It is barely comparable to a GF2 Ultra.

There are many ATI and NVidia cards that would smoke that card.

There are some little tweaks you can do to improve the frame rates from your card.  ATI cards are optimized to run at 32-bit and usually suffer from performance loss at 16-bit resolution.  Turning off mipmapping can also squeeze out a couple of more fps, as well as disabling vsync.  There are also tweak programs out there for ATI cards that can also help you adjust the settings to further enhance the performance of your card.  Check out Guru3D or MajorGeeks either one of those sites should have an ATI tweak program.

I have a similar system (Atlon1800+ & 512 DDR PC2700) running a GF2 MX... I get around 60 to 70 normally, about 40 in smoke @ 32bit & 1024X768.  My card is tweaked for best picture vice performance settings.  I think you should be getting similar results...

CMOS has settings for your AGP slot, might maximize those too.

My understanding of Radeons is that they are much less reliant on you processor to assist with FR, meaning that a 'Hot' system like yours won't make as big a difference.  At least not when compared to an equivilant GF card.

That Guru3D sight is the bomb!! Use it!!
