Just wondering-
« on: July 01, 2002, 04:32:09 PM »
Ive been playing AH only a short time, about 5 months now. In this short amount of time I have noticed a dramatic change in both the game & the people playing it. As with anything some I like & some I don't.
Most of the things I don't like are linked, they have to do with the huge numbers of players the game is acquiring. I am glad to see the developers of this game rewarded for their hard work & efforts, as well as those they employ. However I want to know how many out there are concearned with playability as well as eye candy? My host que as well as most everyone I speak with has been getting worse as numbers increase. I heard talk of a new server some time ago but never got word of completion nor did I notice any increase in connectivity.

With everyone playing in one arena there is a problem.  If there was another arena different from the MA where a hundred or  so could play, that would supply a relief valve for the MA.  Right now, for whatever reasons, the CT is not doing the trick.

well when CT is used its fun, ive played there some when dis-enchanted with MA. I expected more of a response than this...
Guess everyone else is fine with the lags & the alts that huge numbers bring. I'm sure ill find a home. Supposed to be some cool multiplayer driving games on the horizon.....

we need more ppl to fly in the CT. In CT i ama memeber of the vf-27 "hellcats" and everytiem we have squad night we get ppl complaining bout us having too many.  we have lost some great pilots because of these babys. i will not mention names (caugh vulger caugh). but if ma is so full join the CT. expetaly Tue and Thur nights  get ma squads and come to ct on tue and thurs and other days and even the teams so we dont have the "vulgar" crybabies.

New, 512x512 maps will greatly help.  It will spread the players over a larger area.

Consider: When there are 30 or so planes in the air and in view of each other, each AH client must receive positional updates on the other 29 planes.  With each clock tick, there are 30*29 position updates.

What happens when you find 30 planes in one area over many places of the map?  In a phrase, network saturation.

Resets on the 512x512 maps are going be extremely difficult (if not impossible.)  While one country is taking a base from another country, they will be able to take one from you!  There are so many fields, it will be almost impossible to guard all of them  -- unless you truly have overwhelming numbers.

It's going to be interesting from a strategic point of view.

Anton, the other thing that will help in the new release is the update biasing toward nmes.  It means that you may see friendlies warping a bit more, but those cons that you are most concerned with (i.e, the guy you are saddling up on) will be a little less likely to jump round and climb up your ass.

One benefit of the numbers (and remember that a problem arising from too many players is a problem that a certain unnamed sim would love to have right now) is that if you start to get lag where the action is hot and heavy, you can find another corner of the map where there aren't so many cons, but you can still find a good fight.

On the NDisles map on Sunday, my squad ignored some of the furballs and set up shop around v6 and had a lot of great action with nme aircraft and GVs approaching from the north.  Combat never involved more than a dozen people all told, but it was constant, exciting, and well fought on all sides.  In arenas where you don't have the numbers, you pretty much have to go where everyone else is to find a fight.  But I've noticed that the lag tends to disappear (at least for me, and I'm on a 56K--remember those?) if I go looking for those mid-level fights.

Word I heard is that all countries will be abolished and only squads of 12 will be allowed. This will eliminate gang banging, because everyone will be a target everywhere and this will spell the doom for land grabbing.

 All will be well.
