Garbled screen at powerup/post...
« on: July 09, 2002, 02:01:53 PM »
Any ideas?

New PC seems to work quite well, yet every time I boot up, the opening screen (ram count, "Energy Saver" logo etc") are all garbled up...then I get to the point where the Promise Controller is seeking drives and then the system boots normally.

I have a Gigabyte GA-7VRXP and a VisionTek GeForce 4 4600 video card.  I've searched the BIOS high and low, and can't seem to figure this one out.  HELP!

Sounds too similar to what bloom was seeing.  Just seems as if your vid card is finally initializing where bloom's wouldn't.  Is it causing a problem?

Thanks for the link, Im having the identical issue...non 3D, Im working fine.  Last night, I flew Aces for hours with no issues.  Then I clicked on "Optimal Bios Settings" and now lock up in any 3D application after about a minute.  Grrrr

Upgrading....sigh...No good deed goes unpunished

That's exactly why I choose not to get that board LePaul.  Too many people are having problems with GF 4 cards on that board, indeed with a lot of boards.  (VIA, Sis, Intel, all but nVidia it looks like... )  I was having a boot up issue with my old Asus A7V (KT133 chipset) board, but everything works perfect on my new Asus A7N266-C.  I hope you get it working LePaul, but if not you might want to consider using this board too.  So far I'm very happy with it.  Other than the funny little ACR card with the audio ports not being easy to put in, everything has been a snap.  (Let me guess, you bought the board because Tom's Hardware recommended it... )

I did, I did...I really thought I was playing it smart going with what they ruled as the best of the best.  I've sent off a steamy email to Tom's Hardware since I've seen MANY people who bought the board at their reccomendation wind up with tremendous problems.  Luckily I bought this at a local computer firm and am just going to trade it in for an MSI brand....they can deal with the RMA fun.

Gigabyte wins for having the lamest tech support I've ever witnessed.  Here's the reply I got today...

"Dear Sir,

The problem might caused by H/W.
Please contact with local reseller or distributor for checking and repairing.
They will try to solve your problem as they can.
For local reseller and distributor information, please go to http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/buy/buy_all.htm . "

Me thinks I just bought my first and last Gigabyte product.

So, Bloom, does the MSI win some favorable nods?  Or should I eye something else?

Hmmm,...call me silly, but doesn't logic dictate that if all chipsets are having a problem with that video card,..well,..wouldn't it be the video card that is the problem?
'Just a thought.  Maybe my logic is fubar.

Nope, the Via chipsets aren't the blame...poor motherboard design seems to buy the underlying theme to some of these headaches.  At least in the case of my Giga-Crap.

I just want it all to work...I've drooled at GeForce 4's while manning a lowly P3 550...now I've went out and bought all "Top Rated" stuff and tonight I spend another evening dismantling it all...

Well, I've heard the MSI board (KT 3 Ultra or something like that) works fine.  I'd probably try it; but I really do like this Asus A7N266-C board I'm using now. :)

Skuzzy, it's just the Gigabyte board.  It has to do with low supply voltage to the AGP slot (some people are reporting only .91V vs 1.5V required).  I just had a dead out of the box Gigabyte board here at our store, so I don't care much for them.
