Going to first IRL Race, Need Advice
« on: July 03, 2002, 12:49:58 PM »
Hey Guys,
Going to my first IRL Race this Sunday at Kansas Speedway.

Taking my 2 sons, ages 8 and 5.

What should I get beforehand for gear and what should I rent/buy at the track?

- Get earplugs for the kids.
The cars are not as loud as F1 or NASCAR but they are pretty loud.
- Sunscreen.
- AM/FM radio with earplug or even better a closed headset.  That way you can listen to the broadcast of the race and keep aware of things going on that you might not be able to see.
- There are also race scanner headsets you can get that will let you monitor the radios used by the teams and race control.  These frequencies can be entertaining but you will get more info from the broadcast of the race.
- I would tell you to bring ponchos but those oval wussies don't race in the rain.  :)
Have fun :)

Guess you need about same stuff as in Formula 1 races:

-Earplugs are must. Take few extra pairs 'cause you'll see some parents bringing their kids to race without them :(
-Good hat, maybe a towel to cover your and kids neck.
-Plenty of pure water (coke just makes you more thirsty)
-little suntan lotion for kids and you.

It's amazing how fast you can burn your skin in those races. If it's hot you don't need to find a toilet; You're going to sweat like a eskimo in a hot place.

Have fun, do not make too tight schedule and buy some souvenirs.
I bought a McLaren-Mercedes wrist-watch from Hungarian F-1 GP. Nice chronometer made of steel and carbon-fibre. Not cheap but propably lasts my whole life :)

Basically what they said. The Indy cars arent very loud though (for an adult at least) because of those turbos. The one thing you'll miss at a speedway track as to a "normal" left, right turn circuit is the shifting, whoop!! whoop!! whoop!!. That doesnt happen so often on an oval. Other than that wide open throttle :D

BTW: If you bring camera, I would bring a zoom lense and quick or fast film otherwise the cars will be a blur on film.

FWIW IRL stopped using turbos a few years back.  So they are pretty loud compared to CART.

I recommend you go to Indy for F1 if you have kids.  The Montreal track is on an island and it's kind of a pain to get in and out.  Indy is very user friendly in every imaginable way.
