I'm sorry but I have to disagree. The fact is Elle May was not an icon for the "lost innocence" of late 60's and early 70's feminity. Albeit a bit mannish, Ms. Jane did offer some concession to the emerging role of "wimmin" in the heretofore male workplace. I will concede that Jethro did possess aspects of a Jungian proto-male but not to the extent claimed here. I think what you are all overlooking is the fact that Jed clearly had marxist leanings.
That aside, I am shocked and outraged at the claims that granny was actually running a meth lab out by the cement pond. Her character irrefutably represented that which period mores lacked. Her "soap" was meant to cleanse the stains of a confused society.
