Mr. Green Jeans - Hugh "Lumpy" Brannum starred as Mr. Green Jeans, the chief aide to Captain Kangaroo (Bob
Keeshan) at the Treasure House on the successful children's program CAPTAIN KANGAROO/CBS/1955-84. Mr. Green
Jeans got his name from the clothes he wore (a green pair of farmer overalls), and because of his interest with the
outdoors. He visited the Captain with a variety of interesting items, including cute little animals. Before his long running
role on CAPTAIN KANGAROO, Hugh Brannun had been the host of his own local New York Show entitled UNCLE
LUMPY'S CABIN in the early 1950s. The series was described in a letter to the New York Times as "a composite or
synthesis of the old-time values we all like our children to know." Bob Keeshan joined the show as an advisor after he had
a dispute with his employers at the HOWDY DOODY SHOW (he had played Clarabell the Clown). Keeshan's and
Brannum's professional relationship endured over three decades. On April 22, 1987, Hugh Brannum died of cancer at his
home in Sailorsburg, Pennsylvania. He was 77 years old.

The guy on the left was Mr. Bainter the Painter!  C'mon guys how can you forget the important stuff like that.

I sometimes wonder what I might be able to do if my head wasn't filled with old song lyrics, commercial jingles and other worthless crap.

I remember he had this scratchy "hard night at the liquor lounge" voice.  I had forgotten about him until I saw that photo.

Toothopolis was the Crest commercial.  I can still hear that siren whenever I see the box: "Cre-est! Cre-est!"

There's another kid show that was sponsored by Colgate toothpaste.  I thought it was Captain Kangaroo, but it'd be strange to have competitors on the same program.  The host would use this huge cardboard box that looked like a big version of the normal toothpaste wrapper, but had a giant key in the side and the host would turn the key and it would play the jingle "Colgate Flouride MFP, keeps your teeth clean naturally!"

"Picture Pages" was on the Bill Cosby kids' show, not Kaptain Kangaroo.

"Picture pages, picture pages,
Time to play the picture pages,
Time for your crayons or a pencil..."

Helps pre-vent the cav-i-ty,
And it tastes great, natr-ul-ly!"

Coulda swore that was Kaptain Kangaroo...

They used to show a segment of this on Cpt. Kangaroo.  I believe it was in the 80's.  I remember seeing it when my step brothers and sisters were watching Cpt. Kang.....

Slightly off-topic, but, I remember being on a local kids TV show in Minneapolis called "The Casey Jones Show", with "Popeye and Pete".  :)  My 15 seconds of fame was taking out goodies in a bag that every kid got, and holding it up for the camera while the announcer explained the product (probably paid advertisement to keep the show running).

The Captain had big coat pockets.  Didn't he have a moose puppet on the show?
