Too Much RAM ???
« on: July 07, 2002, 12:39:28 PM »
I have an Athlon 2000+, have 512 of RAM...when I add an extra 256 chip everything works fine except AH.  It crashed to desktop.  I have swapped out the RAM...I know the chip is functional.  Any thoughts as to why this could be happening.

Athlon XP 2000
Windows XP Home
512 RAM
Nvidia Ti4600 128 mb vid card
Sounblaster 5.1

Have updated drivers for everything!

Thanks for your help.  And by the way...has nothing to do with 1.10  :)

Too Much RAM ???

Hi!  A few more specs would be nice.  Is it SDRAM, or DDR?  How many memory slots in the motherboard and is it a different brand or timing from the other memory?

Some motherboards will only accept certain configurations; such as double-sided ram in the first two slots then either one double-sided in the third or two single-sided chips in the third and fourth.

Two different brands of memory can work together if they are the same speed, however there is the chance that they will not work together. This can occur with the same brand memory purchased months apart (this has happened to me personally).  For the sake of keeping problems to a minimum I always suggest my customers purchase their memory chips at the same time if they can afford it.

Hope this helps you,

Jeff

More specs

It is DDR RAM and it was purchased at the same time as the system from the same peeps.  I have 3 slots for memory.

It appears to be same specs as before.  The 3 RAM chips are recognized by the sysem and perform well.  All programs run except AH which will either crash to desktop or the cursor will freeze on the opening clipboard page.

If I remove the addtional RAM...AH runs fine.  I have even interchanged RAM chips with each other with the same result.

Something about AH gets "overloaded" it seems with the additional RAM in this unit.

Thank you again for your help.

What brand motherboard?  This is not the first time I have heard of issues with three pieces of DDR in a system.  The original DDR motherboards only came with two DDR slots.
