Please get rid of Mindanao
« on: July 19, 2002, 11:41:43 PM »
This is quiete possibly the worst map ever made.  I've had to put up with Mindanao mania enough (especially right after 1.08 came out when it was played for like 2 whole months).  I think it's time to kill this map for good, ok i can see bringing back the old maps because playing akdesert would get old and we have to wait for the new 512x512 maps but to reinstate Mindanao (aka the worst map EVER) is madness.  Just put this POS of a map to rest for good please, i'm sure that many wouldn't mind it.

 We get 512x512 size maps then everyone says they are too big, then we get ALL maps in rotation to give everyone a chance to play the maps they enjoy and we get complaints of the map being too small...

At least they are in rotation now, that means pizza map will be back, as well as smaller maps, that means everyone will get to play their favorite maps, if you don't like the map being hosted in the MA, join the CT arena like me.

And if you don't join the CT just because the lack of players... Well thats no reason not to join, CT can be just as if not more populated (in areas) then the MA, and can be VERY fun, even with only 10 or so people.

I think the reason the Combat Theater never has allot of people is that people never join it cuz it doesnt have allotta people!, But if people would just join it & try it out sometime when theres a map in the MA you don't like, I think it would become very populated, and the more populated it became the more people would join, making it even more populated.
Of course I know numbers arent the Only reason that ppl don't join CT, but I think its the same reason.

I've observed this,
In the morning there are about 1-2 ppl in the CT, then it SLOWLY increases, and once it gets past about 10-15 (if it does get that far) then numbers usuelly start increasing very rapidly.

Anyway, just saying Give CT a try!, and the more you play there, the more other ppl will too! :)

First off, we will likely be in NDISLE forever.  Quite frankly people just don't seem to care about taking fields anymore.  Nobody  is even making missions.  (I have my ideas on why but I am keeping that to myself)

It's all become quite boring actually, but I am getting in some good practice.  It takes a long time and you have to climb a bit but 1:1 is out there to find.

Welcome to Furball High?

But I actually LIKE Mindano map :) At least has some terrain variation you can use.  All of these maps were made for a different game than what we are playing now though.

I would like to visit CT more, but the settings/designs often are quite strange and experimental.  That is great fun and all for you guys in the lab, but why reinvent the wheel?

I bet ya if you set up a "normal" arena in there - that means normal MA Icons/radar firstly - you would do much better.  But don't set up a wierd science experiiment and expect 100 people to show up, that just isn't going to happen.  If you aren't designing for at least 100 folks, boy that sure is a server we could use to make TOD run better.

Someone once did invent a much better mouse trap - and it didn't sell.

I love that map.  All those hills and valleys...makes dogfights a real joy when you get down to NOE twisting and turning up and down with the landscape.

If you only keep one map, make it this one, or one like this  :)
//c coad  c coad run  run coad run
main (){char _[]={"S~||(iuv{nkx%K9Y$hzhhd\x0c"},__
,___=1;for(__=___>>___;__<((___<<___<<___<<___<<___
)+(___<<___<<___<<___)-___);__+=___)putchar((_[__
])+(__/((___<<___)+___))-((___&

 Define "wierd science experiment".

The radar settings are most of the times almost same as the MA and icon ranges are just fine. When was the last time you were in the CT? Last year?

Settings and designs go by just fine, and if it is indeed strange, the staff members take time to listen and change it immediately if they concur the complaint is a reasonable one.

Cut this 'experimental aura which drives people away' bullshi*. People don't show up in the CT because the average pilot in AH don't know how to fly anything else than La-7s, N1K2s and Spit9s. Or, they prefer AWACS assitance and icon settings which comfortably helps in cherry picking and racking up scores. Everyone knows this.

Balanced matchups, compromises between reality and gameplay, better environment for strat, better environment for missions, better furballs, even numbers on both sides, faster response times in requests on the arena... the CT has solved much of virtually everything what people whine about in MA. The only truly 'reasonable' cause why people shouldn't like the CT is about the limited plane setups. Anything else than that is just crap.

The reason is, people are broken.

Game players always take the path of least resistance.  Do things in the most effective way.  Even if doing something the hard way will pay off better, they'll always go the easy route.

This seems to make sense, except that often, the easy route is boring as hell, and the players lose interest and stops playing.  So, the easy route is changed, now all of these people who, if it were not changed, would quickly leave, squeak.  They squeak even when they're now having more fun.

A gamer is out to have fun.
A gamer has fun by facing some sort of challenge.
Gamers will go around a challenge if in any way possible.

Being able to consistantly avoid any kind of challenge will cause people to stop playing in large numbers.  The REAL problems start when avoiding the challenge pays off more than facing it.

*looks around*
How'd I get here?
*posts anyways*
