How far out do you launch a torpedo when trying to kill a carrier?  Is there an aiming point you use or just best guess?  Is it the same for a JU-88, TBM & PT?

if you do a search on the BBS theres some good threads on this with pictures showing when to drop.

a few tips,
1,speed under 200mph
2, Alt under 200  (i think)
3, drop when the flak starts and get outta there or you will surley die.
4, when I use the JU 88 if attacking from 90 degrees I type '.salvo 1' and drop torps seperatley. and fan them out a tiny bit so they aren't both going parallel to target.
5, check where aircraft from carrier are heading (normally towards the land) and attack under radar from opposite side and hopefullt nobody will notice you only the cpu controlled guns, this will help you survive.
6, get loads of wingmen and flood the sea with torps.
7, HO the fleet and drop towards front of ships can drop torps before flak as target is closing towards you.

8, do jabo instead as your more likely to survive :D

How much lead do I need to give the target?

Firing torpedos towards the side of a CV is pointless, you might as well shoot them randomly.

The best way to use torpedos on a fleet is to circle around and drop them directly in front of, and headed directly into the CV.

Divebombing is almost always more effective though.

JU-88 torp's are I believe of a different type than all the rest. They are faster, but have a shorter run distance, so they need to be closer.

The others will run at least 5k if not more.

You can hit a ship with a 90 degree angle attack, but you have to have a 45degree lead on it at the point of drop. So your aiming in front of the Cruiser to hit the CV.

Down the are easier in some respects, but harder in others. If you are off just a hair, or it turns your out of luck.

Torp runs are in my opinion the hardest challenge that Aces High has to offer. Only 2 people that I've known could consistantly get torps into CV groups. By which I mean more than 50% success ratio.

Bombing is always going to be much easier.
