Beep Beep Beep
« on: July 11, 2002, 06:44:45 PM »
My main computer just had an Aneurysm. I walked away from it last night with it working and when I came back the screen was black. I rebooted and got a black screen with a continuous, repetitive bios post beep. I jumped on another computer on my home lan and found that is the error code is for a card loose/short (not the issue); power supply or keyboard.

I’m in the process now of trying to diagnose the specific source of the failure but wonder if this could be the problem. A few days ago I spilled a glass of water on my keyboard. It got all funky so I swapped it with a dry one. An hour before the failure I tried the now dry (for several days) keyboard. I was still getting funky crossed key inputs, so I switched back. All swapping was done powered down. Then, as I mention, it had a total failure. Could the damaged keyboard have shorted the keyboard controller?

Or, just a coincidental MB or processor failure.

BTW, it was 9:00 PM with three articles due today. Fortunately, with the miracle of PnP I was able to swap in the HD with another lan machine and I was back at work in 45 minutes.

I doubt a short circuit in your Kboard could damage your MB. (Maybe on the power wires to the Num lock, caps lock and scroll lock LEDs).

And if it is possible, damage would have been done immediately after you spilled the water on the keyboard or after you plugged it in again.

Thanks.

I got some free time today in between making phone calls so I'm going to try to find out which component failed for a replacement. I have a feeling it's going to come down to MB/CPU, and since I don't have any other socket A processors in the house, or socket A MBs for that matter, I'll just try a new MB first. If Im wrong, Ill just order 2 new CPUS and upgrade my Beta system for DOOM3 :) I wonder if I had a CPU cooling failure? I'll check that first.

Well, case solved. My motherF#%ing CPU cooling fan just decided to stick I guess. With a little prodding it spun up but WAY too late for the chip. One fried Athlon XP. I would hope the mother board is still ok?

charon.. prolly not :(
i had the same thing happen with my old pc but from me it was the power supply. pc just shut down right in the middle of a dogfight
the good news is that with the newer motherboards out there you can use the built in software that moniters the cpu fan and power fan. if it detects that they are not running properly it will give you a warning and shut down the pc. also if you have and athlon processer make sure your bios detects the fan. for that you cant use a fan powered directly from the power supply (ie one of those monster fans over 4" tall)
well hope u can get it up and runnin again
I don't know what to put here yet.
