New respect for the K-61
« on: July 22, 2002, 10:36:32 AM »
Months ago, when I started playing AH, I tried out the Ki-61 and had a hard time in it.  Didn't seem to have what it takes in climb or speed.

Then comes this setup in the CT...  After getting my hiney handed to me by a Ki-61 multiple times I left the CT and headed over to the MA and upped a Tony.  The result:

1 P-38 (This was a stall fight.  He goofed up, I didn't.)
1 Spit 9
1 La-7
1 Hurricane
1 Lancaster.
0 P-51 (He dove on me 3 times, got co-e, left me alone)

Never lost a Tony.  Landed all but the P-38 (glider landing near runway).

Hmmm.

The Ki-61 has the Messerschmitt's power but the Zeke's guns, kinda like the C.205.

I noticed that, of the planes you defeated, only one of them is in the CT this week.

Since, as I mentioned, I did my playing around in the MA that is not too suprising...  I love the CT and fly there when I can but after 9:00 pm PST there is seldom anyone there.

Actually Gofaster, the Ki-61s armament is heavier than the Zekes. Okay I am no expert on Japanese aerial weapons, but I do believe the MG's are close to 50 cal, and the Cannons are in the nose on the Ki, instead of the wing like the Zeke. If you can get in  less than 300 ft the Ki's gun are killer, just not much ammo. Then again the Russian planes dry up pretty fast too.
As far as the F4U4, I shot down 3 friday, but I never got home after, in fact one of the pilots I shot down was able to re-up and catch me before I could RTB. The F4U4 also seems to be able to out turn the Ki-61, I know , I know it's a big heavy airplane and shouldn't.
Honest I didnt smoke anything until after I logged off.:D
I got out manuvered over and over again Friday by F4U4's.
I was talking to 1Duke1 from VF-27 about it, and the only thing we could figure was that big powerfull engine on the -4 Corsair allows it to whip around faster than we see in the other models of the F4U.

The Tony has as it arament what is considered to be one of the Best 20mm cannons of the entire war.

The Ho-5, is an upsized derivative of the Browing 50cal MG, the Ho 103 is the 12.7mm MG on the tony, which is basicaly a coppy of the Browning gun. But these are not just simple coppies, the Japanese improvied on the design, they made the weapons lighter than their US counterparts, the ammo is a bit lighter as well, and the Japanese were Sold on HEI(Heigh Explosive Incendeary rounds) they fired almost all HEI, the only thing that was not was the tracer, which was a composit AP/tracer round. The rounds are a bit lighter so do not Reach out their like hispanos, and they do not hit as hard as the 20mm Type 99 rounds(which hit 99% as hard as hispanos), but the rate of fire is Very Heigh and a short burst deleavers a ton of them on target.
So get in close (I set my Convergance at 400) and place your shots, I use the MG's to get a feal for this and Make the commitment with the 20mm:)

I had the pleashure of examong bot a Ho 5 and a Ho 103, I actualy picked them up, they were well made, and yes very light, in sharp contrast to the US 50 Cal Browning, which is a gut buster to pick up.

20mm Ho-5, with a chemical detonator, as aposed to a mechanical one, this technolagy enabled more bang for the buck, since more explosive could be packed into the shell. Also shown is the AP/Tracer round.

Sorry, I didn't mean to belittle your accomplishment.  My intent was to point out that you were unsuccessful in engaging the aircraft I'm griping about in the CT: the Corsairs.

Your knocking down the Spitfire and LA-7 in the MA has given me some ideas for tonight's flying :)  Last night there was an overabundance of Dweebfires and Loser-7s as the map got closer to reset.  I might have to surprise some players tonight...

Hmmm.  I didn't get a chance to do much shooting against the 4 Corsairs that I tangled with in the CT over the weekend.  I just assumed it had the same MGs and cannon as the Zeke.
