What Is Game Freeze Point?
« on: July 21, 2002, 12:06:55 AM »
Sunday morning at 12:45 a.m. EDT found a dandy fleet strike against A9 -- EXCEPT the warping and freezing made it unplayable sometimes with freezes (including CTD) and no fun much of the time with warping.

What is the critical mass point for Aces High?  How many actions can it handle in a given area before it breaks?

I have the latest and greatest 2.26 gHz P4 XP on an excellent cable connection, so if my system is periodically choking, there has to be a lot of agony throughout the game.

There's been endless discussion in all forums about warping and freezing since the beginning.  The game wants to expand, but first the existing participants deserve 24/7 ultra reliability in smooth play.  Maybe it needs not just arena maximums but some kind of sector governors to limit participants below the choke point when specific fights heat up too much.

About 350 people were in the 500 player Main Arena, and at A9 probably about 40 or 50 people total.  So what is critical mass?  I'm tired of drawing a bead on a bandit 200 yards away only to have him vanish totally out of the picture and re-emerge 300 yards away in another direction.  I'm tired of having strafers fly right through an ack barrage unscathed.

I understand processing lag and saturation, and regret we seem to reach that point all too often.  What's the solution?  It's been perhaps the major issue since on-line cyber contests began.  Isolated engagements seem smooth enough, but when the battles heat up, the game responsiveness gets crippled.

The freezes and CTD's are a seperate problem. Saturation point on visable cons will cause the "blinking" in and out and warping. WB saturation was 32, gotta be more here. They don't have the "cult" computer to deal with here :D Can you say hallelujah :D

Gotta figure you come upon a MASS of dots, your inviting an overload situation.

For the first time since the small maps I DIDN'T have a freeze or CTD Saturday. My changes were removing Mitsu's 104 sounds and installing the complete 105 version.

Don't know if that was a cawinkydink or...
