I agree.David Gilmore would be broke if he got paid by the note. But NOBODY does so much by playing so little. He never played a fast lick in his life cause he didnt NEED to :)
Alex Liefson.Another great one. Flying in a blue dream wasnt the greatest wax of all time. But it does have several really good tunes.  Eddie Van is Incredible but hardly the best.Robin Trower "Bridge of sighs" Ahhhhhhh

DrDea, you forgot Francis Goya!

Anyone remember the Japanese heavy band from the mid 80's. I've tried to remember the band name but can't. Band guitarist was elected the "guitarist of the year". He was fast and had good solos. Anyone?

There's gotta be some soul in the music.  Lightening fast scales are nothing more but technical speed.  The players feelings should be reverberated through his instrument.  Scholz of Boston is one example.  One can see the classical background tastes in his playing.  BB and Lucille, Clapton exhibit that kind of music everytime they pick up the guitar, so did Stevie Ray.  Big deal some jerk can play technically fast...as the old commercial said "Where's the Beef?"  They're technicians......nothing more!

If you guys get a chance to, pick up some Clutch. They're a Maryland band that I've been listening to for a hundred years or so. I'm not into the "solo" playing guitar player, but more into how the guitar fits with the rest of the band, and these guys are insane. And I have to mention Quicksand for balls to the wall drum playing, and Tool for pure anger.
