British 2" Mortar

The soldiers are wearing British 44 pattern Helmets

The shoulder flash I think indicates from the IV British Corps.

Oh yes I even have a picture of that aiming device in use, its lined along the barrel and shows the angle its is laid at.

Based on a Spanish design, into production in 1938, out of service in 1970.  Can be fired horizontally.  

This pic is one of 3 variations (mainly to do with the gound mount).

Can't believe it took them that long to figure out you can't hit toejam using a mortar tube without a baseplate .  Soldiers must've really had an aversion to humping gear back then .

Both the brit 2" and the M19 had small spade base plates..
In combat they where used more like we would use a grenade launcher today.
I trained with the M19 alot in the 80s and you could hit with it really well. but its not an idirect fire weapon..its a heavy grenade launcher..

The Japanese knee mortar is of simalir design/concept, and I have read stories on how proficent they were at hiting with it.
