Police dog's just desserts
01 August 2002

A Wellington police dog that bit kidnap accused John Burrett last week can look forward to some extra rations, thanks to a Palmerston North woman.

Staff at the Palmerston North central police station were bemused when an elderly woman entered the station carrying a big tin of dog food and placed it on the counter.

The woman demanded that staff pass the dog food on to the police dog involved in apprehending Burrett, the Upper Hutt lawyer who spent time in hospital after being bitten by the dog.

Burrett and two others are charged with the attempted kidnapping of a prominent Wellington businessman.

A source close to police said that the woman refused to take any notice of police protestations that the police dogs were on strictly controlled diets, and left the tin of dog food behind her when she left the station.

"She wouldn't have a bar of it," the source said.

"But at least it should help the dog get the taste of lawyer out of its mouth." – NZPA
