Help by example
« on: July 31, 2002, 01:14:35 AM »
I had a lot of trouble understanding some of the instructions and forum discussion. Eventually I learned what i needed. To help others, I have posted a fully functional H2H map to use as a build example. THe zip file includes an uncompiled H2H  terrain w color map.

Use it freely as an example of host it in H2H:
set up CV's, roads, convoys, depots, trains, cities, elevated fields,. pretty mucheverything I could think to add.
( I would have added a bardge, but it porks the road interchange.)

Now.. If only I could get my hands on the new editor.

To get the map, visit http://mostwanted.home.insightbb.com
and go to the features section

Criticism is welcome

I appiaud what you are doing with this terrain idea

I downloaded to check it out.

2 thing right off the bat!

1) You can't have terrain names longer than 8 characters long.
I know you can use Letters, Numbers and a Slash ( - ) plus I think you can use the Underscore ( _ ) but I'm not sure of the remaing symbols ( ~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) + = etc )

So Winchester will need to be changed to
Winchest or Wchester

2) There are several errors

Run the Editor
Select Objects ( top right )
Click Objects Report ( bottom right )
Make sure Check terrain for is set for "all errors"
Click Check Terrain

You'll see the list of errors

_____________________________ _______________________

Just some information

Watch out for the following Group Objects airfields because they don't have maproom sets ( maproom + maptable)

I believe this is because they were to be joined with fldcap1 which has the maproom set.

lgfld2
medfld2
smfld

/////////////////////////////////

There are some also some major and minor bugs with the following fields. So watch out for them:

AFDbl-1
AFFwd-1
AFLrg-1
AFMed-1
drtfield
port2
portR2
vfield2
VFMed-1

Most of the major problems are with the map rooms.

This is how Map Room Set are suppose to be setup as:

maptable=MAPTBL1 (shape name) is set as Map Room (object type)

and

maproom=MPRM1 (shape name) is set as Void (object type)

Remember to uncheck the "Can Collide" box for both of these items, if not you can capture a field but just shooting the Map Room.

Here are some files that I had put together.

I had a terrable time learning to use the map editor. I read the manal (eventually) and asked questions on the message board. My conclusion was that either those that knew how to, couldnt make since of my queations, or I was just not getting it and they did’nt care. Well, now I’ve got it.   So to help you others that dont get it yet, use my map as an example to help you get started with some of the trickier things.

Sorry you had a hard time with learning the editor ( YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN THE EARLY DAYS OF IT.....ask Nuttz :D) , but I think you are wrong about the "I was just not getting it and they did’nt care".

You never seem to reply back to those who gave an answer to your question to say that you didn't understand the answer they gave to your question, or that you did understand their answer.

It was more of a general 'head scratcher' statement. A lot of us (myself), are confused about the new terminology and  flow of the editor. I'm sure they seem fundimental, ( because I understand everything you wrote now), but a lot was lost in my initial translation of the help files.  Example, I didnt know that you couldnt work with zones until I discovered the new editor was released in limited edition to some.

I think it would be helpfull if we expanded on terrain building as a group. Surely there are some that are more creative, and others more techie. If we could get together we could bring some really cool things to the front.

Has anyone proposed a community web site with a focus on team projects?
Someone could submit cool stratigic designs, someone else appropriate terrain, and still others to implement it.

I would be eager to do  something like this, If I knew I had proactive support. (although I'm still a newbie)

P.S. I have been at the front end of development before.. I know what u mean about 'The early days'

HITECH!!!! PLEASE GIVE US THE NEW EDITOR!! Perfection is the enemy of Good!

The editor has been out for years, It's a trial and error sort of thing.

There is a Terrain  and mapmaking team (CM), you may want to drop them a line if your really Interested.

99% of your questions can be answered by going back threw the old post in this forum.

I am In the process of putting up a server for people that are interested in storing maps. Pokie is getting his help files ready and soon a Guide to mapmaking website will be in place. I'm just waiting for the OS to be put in.

I'm sorry but I will only allow more experienced mapmakers to access the server and use it for storage. I've seen alot of people come in like gangbusters only to fizzle out and find it's too much work. With a limited amount of starting space, i will have to keep the people who can access it to a minimium. But that doesn't mean you can't start your own, or stick around and "put in your time". for the last 2+ years the mapmakers have readily shared and helped each other in this forum.

Just go back and do a search you will learn alot!!!

99% of the stuff can be done in this editor, give HTC time, soon enough the new editor will be released when it's done.
