Video Card overclocking?

Bloom, you left a nice link to that HardCop website.  Reading a few of the reviews, one of the reviewers mentioned this in a GeForce 4 Ti 4600 review....

Haven't tried this, then again I do not have an overclocker program either.

LePaul, you can do the "coolbits" registry hack, posted on this BBS and many other places, to allow you to bump up core and memory speeds.  There are also free programs available that let you do the same (and more).  Rivatuner is one such program.

I think I might try it myself, my:

XP 1900+ on Asus A7N266-C
512 MB Kingston PC2100 DDR
MSI GeForce 4 Ti 4200 64 MB card (stock speeds)
DX 8.1b
28.90 Drivers

scored 9460 on 3dmark 2001 SE @ 1024x768 defaults.

I haven't had time for much tweaking yet, but upping the CPU to 1636 MHz (bios says XP 1947+ ;) ) gave me a 9550.

Since this card has 3.6 ns memory I can overclock it to 550 MHz (500 MHz stock) along with a small core boost without any problems at all.

My goal is to break 10000.

You arent far behind me, with all the FSAA stuff off, Im scoring 9950.

I might try it to see if I break that 10k barrier too.  I havent overclocked my CPU to do it tho (Athlon XP 2000+ here, not sure how far to nudge it up, and if the MSI board will let me) ;)

You've got a 4600 card though right?

You could bump the CPU up just a bit and get a 10000 score.

Just go into the bios and change your FSB from 133 Mhz to 134 or 135 MHz (which should be safe) and you'll probably get it.

If you go too high the system will fail to boot, or will boot but be unstable.  If it fails to boot, you can just clear the cmos and start over.

At 135 MHz FSB your CPU will run at 1690 MHz or so (stock is 1667 MHz).  That should be enough to break 10000 for you.

Just using a different driver version could do it as well.

Thanks, you read my mind....I didnt know how far to push that barrier...I did 140mhz and I boot as a AMD Athlon XP 2100  :-)  Notching it back a tad now

Ok Bloom, here's what we did....

CPU overclocked to 136mhz FSB =1700mhz

Video card (VisionTek GeForce 4 4600) to 317.3 core, 702mhz ram

Anything over 318 and I lock up in 3DMark's first test.  Oh well, pretty damn cool...and temperatures are showing 41F...1 degree more than before.  I have the AMD CPU fan in there plus 2 80mms..one pull air in from the front, one in the back, over the CPU, yanking air out.  Good ventilation

Now the results...

Was it stable at that speed?  With good ram (main limiting factor oftentimes) it may have been.

I've switched to the brand new Detonator 30.82 drivers on Nvidia's site.

I think they actually perform a little worse than the 28.90s overall though.

After switching I was down from a 9550 to 9488.  The score seems to vary everytime you run it by around 50 points though... .

Overclocking the ram on my card to 540 MHz gave me a 9626.  I was thinking of trying for more, but there's no reason to compromise the stablility of my card and system.  To get to 10000 I'd have to do some serious tweaking with just a 64 MB Ti 4200 card and I will always sacrifice some very minor speed improvements for stablity anyday.

Stupid question - how are you getting that text printout?  I can get that in a window, but can't copy and paste from it.

Well, with the memory at 562 Mhz I got a 9668.  Since I have that MSI card I'm sure I could up the core speed and get some more, but I don't know if I wan't to push it much harder.

Upping the GPU core to 275 MHz helped a lot.  Maybe I could break 10000 afterall (but I don't know if I wan't to risk it.)

You didn't really think I'd quit did you? :D  (I can squeze just a tad more out ... maybe) This is with the CPU FSB at 138 MHz (1660 MHz) with GPU core at 286 MHz and Memory at 584 MHz.
