I did that once - inadvertantly.  Went into the garage to check on the laundry or whatnot and didn't bother turning on the light.  Stepped on something, thought it was a piece of lint.  Turned on the light and the evidence told the truth.  Had to walk on the blade of my foot through the house to wash off the insect DNA in the bathtub.

One day when I was in elementary school, I put on my shoes in the dark and went to school at 7:30 am, came home from school around 2:30pm, and when I took off my shoes, there was a roach stuck to the end of my sock, its body crushed by my toes but its legs were still kicking.

After that, I learned to run my hands through my shoes to make sure there weren't any foreigh objects in there.

I don't know about Florida,

but I once stopped at a gas station bathroom in west Texas. As I stepped up to the urinal I noticed it was occupied already... by 2 of the biggest meanest looking roaches I've ever seen. I swear one had tattoos! I decided to use the other urinal.... didn't want to risk pissing them off.

I'm pretty sure there were 2 little Harley's parked out front too. But then again I had just discovered what a Lone Star long-neck was so....

my fav roach encounter:

me and the woman were in a low level parking garage in Barcelona.. it was summer and hotter than hell on the street, and down about 3 levels it had to have been a muggy 115 degrees if not more. We parked and found our way to the stairwell, I reached for what I thought was the doorknob and this big mother cockroach sprouted wings and fluttered! the body on this beast was at least 3 1/2 or 4 inches wide and with the wings open, it added several more inches in wingspan. it looked like a damn bird scared the hell out of us as we are used to the tiny Pacific Northwest 1/4 inch variety of roach.

One morning in 1993 or 1994 my brother in-law was outside around his pool and noticed a huge roach floating in it...dead.  He got the net out and removed the offending bug.  Earlier that morning he had read about a competition being held in Texas to find the largest roach in the world.  So..he put in in an old pensil box and Fed-Exed it to the competition.  "One Dead Bug" was the declared contents.  He came second...and was presented with a framed certificate testifying to his runner-up position.  Someone from Japan won.

The roaches here are HUGE.  The females have wings and have also been mistaken for birds.
Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain that is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain

Hehehe, that's pretty good.  I can see the shocked looks on their faces now.  They probably thought they were seeing some sort of beetle...

get it right

a roach in florida is a little bitty thing either asian or german bout the size of a quarter

the Palmetto Bug is the "Papa Roach" here. They get to be the size of the palm of your hand and can scare cats and small dogs.

and your not a real Floridian until you have a "Palmetto Spitting Contest"  ... :)
