User Definable 'smoke persistance'

HT and company at one point (I have heard) stated that the reduced smoke trails and Ack puffs were done to reduce the Frame Rate hit of the particle system.

How difficult would it be to add a setup parameter for each users FE.  If they have the horsepower, they can set it up to as high as they want.  If they don't, they can set it to some minimum setting.
