Rookie Pilot looking for Squad
« on: August 09, 2002, 08:12:44 AM »
Hi. This is my first post (after some time lurking both on the BBS and in MA TA CT etc).

I am a Virtual Pilot (been a real monoplane once or twice) and I’ve been flying things on computers since 747 Jet Lander on the BBC Micro (model B).

Now that I have found Aces High, I don’t do much else, and I think I am improving (although I still suck bigtime).

It occurs to me that all this flying lone wolf stuff is alright now and again, but to really get results (and stand a chance) you need to be flying either in a squad, as a squad, or as a loose formation of individual pilots with the same goal.

I’ve been invited to join squads before, but they’ve all been US based with meet times of 3am (here in Britain) so whilst I was happy to be invited, I couldn’t really join.

Are there any UK based squads that meet at sensible times GMT/BST like maybe 9:30 once or twice a week for 3 hours or something?

I would really like to train in a squadron – doing all kinds of stuff so that I can do it better. In MA, flying on my own, I tend to just listen/watch the radio and the map and go for where the action is, rather than creating any action myself. I’m particularly interested in Buffing, although turnfighting is great fun too. BnZ you can keep (until I get the hang of it).

If not  - how about creating my own squad – any hints tips advice dos donts forget its etc?

How do you all use your squads? How does your chain of command work out, do your leaders lead from the front, do you split between GVs and ACs? How do you fly 9 bombers in formation (i.e how to keep 3 bomber formations in formation?). Has anyone tried massed buffing and can I join in?

Thanks for reading this far, look forward to all (if any) replies

There are UK squads, and then there is the 332nd Viking's.

Do a bit of reseach and I'm sure you'll find one that will suit you. I'd drag you into my squad the 332nd Flying Mongrels but we're pretty much full up right now.

Best of luck & shoot me an email if I can be of further assistance. billj69@btinet.net

The oldest UK squad still going is the Krait Squadron ( in flight sims that is) as it was one of the first UK squads in Air Warrior and has been around about 12 years.  Feel free to chat with any Krait member if you're interested in flying UK times, and tagging on.

Thanks Ghosth, Joc, Spiffykraits and Skyman.:)

On reflection, I think I'd like to try out with the 332nd Vikings. No reflection on the Kraits, Firebirds or 57 Sqdn, but I think the Vikings are exactly what I'm looking for. Now all I have to do is hope I'm what they're looking for.

Anyone in the 332nd Vikings reading this? Fancy introducing me on one of your squad nights - this Sunday 18.08.02?

That'd be great.
