Shucks :(

We've had serious storms here about 3 weeks ago, and I did receive an email from my ISP asking me to unplug my modem.

Sorry to hear it Fester.  All things considered, you got off relatively easy...my mother's house just had a power surge...blew out her alarm system, central vaccuum system, garage door opener, two televisions, brand new printer/scanner/copier/fax machine, desktop and laptop.

You might want to check your homeowner's insurance policy for surge protection.  My mother's policy is taking care of just about the entire lot.

Good luck, and hope to see you up in the skies again soon...

About a month ago I was working on the computer (okay..i was really looking at porn :D) when lightning started.  I decided that I could finish in a couple of minutes so I decided continue and shut down after I was though :(

Bad move...lightning struck very close to the house sending electricity though the cable line into my computer...it even made it through the mouse and into me  Yeah...I jumped a couple of feet backwards out of my chair

Luckily only the modem and ethernet card were toasted...surprisingly my computer only shut down instead of exploding and restarted without problems later.

In the past I laughed at my friend who unplugged his computer during lightning storms...now I'm sure someone laughs at me:p

seems that only sidewinder ff2 joystick and ethernet card are toast. replaced em and reformatted hd w windows xp and got some sort of memory fault error messages so maybe the ram and motherboard and cpu are screwy too.

so i formatted it again and put windows 98 on and it runs fine.

stupid microsoft ;)

Sorry to hear that Fester.  A few things, make sure you have a good ground.  Also surge protectors are rated by the energy they can protect against.  It's not a bad idea to spend a little money to get a good one.  The surge protector I use now has a warranty for damage to the PC.  If something ever happened to mine, I could never find the dam thing, but I know I have it :)

I use a surge protector that incorporates cable line as well because you just never know. Cable Tech told me they dont recommend it as it will interfear with cable connectivity to my modem, I just laughed at him and asked if he was willing to replace all my computer equipment should a surge occur, he shut his mouth and left quickly!:D
