Suggestions on Making Airfields More Target Rich...
« on: August 23, 2002, 02:37:48 PM »
Hi All,

One of the frquently voiced criticisms of the new bombing system is that the targets on the Airfields are too widely spaced for the "togglers" in our strategic bombers to hit.

Here then are some initial suggestions for adding targets to the airfields. Please feel free to suggest some of your own.

1) MG installations: Most British and German airfields had several sandbagged MG installations (usually twin MG42s or twin Vickers "K" guns) scattered about the airfield in order to combat low-level strafing by fighters. Adding some of these and making them player mannable would add realism and a fun dimension for defenders. They would also be a target more safely destroyed by high-level buffs, which would be immune to them.

2) Radio Shacks & towers: Killing these would turn off the "flasher" and the "Base under attack" notification for that airfield. Icon could simply go dark to indicate no communications.

3) Supply Depots/Warehouses: Containing spare parts etc. Killing these could either slow down the rebuild rate at fields, or add the possibility of mechanical failure in A/Cs upped from fields with destroyed parts shacks. Yes Virginia, radiators and oil pumps sometimes failed in aircraft that hadn't been pinged at all.

4) Officers Club/Naafi Hut: Not sure what killing these would do, other than making donuts unavailable. But real Airfields had them.

5) Vehicle Parks: With lots of lovely truckies, jeeps, M3s etc. Killing them would slow down rebuild times and make reloads unavailable.

6) Fuel Trucks: Park several of these around the field perhaps (fuel doesn't actually move directly from the storage tank to the AC) Killing them all would limit max fuel to say 75%.

Your Thoughts?

Hey I'm all for additional targets.
I particularily like the mg nests idea.
I hate manning the normal cannons since I am such a terrible shot.  Give me something with a higher rate of fire so I can just spray and pray :D

I don't have any other ideas for additional targets.  Seems like you covered it rather well.

This is a nice idea, adding more targets and manable guns would make a more realsistic combat similation.
Additional you could also mount some 20mm and 40mm scattered around the base also along with the MG's
in addition some manable flak tower for the 20 & 40 mm guns.

Why not just spawn an M-16? And it gives you mobility verses just being a completely stationary target… Survivability would be about even too. :D

True but...

1) We are talking about making Airfields more target rich for buffs, and actual airfields had MG nests. M16s are not are not airfield targets for high level buffs. While you are right to point out M16s aren't stationary we are trying to see what stationary items could be added.
2) The VH is usually the first target taken out when an airfield is attacked
3) Jumping to an MG nest in the event of a sudden NOE raid takes far less time than spawning an M16 and then driving it to field.
