microsoft sidewinder calibration
« on: August 18, 2002, 06:55:59 PM »
Hi

I have a USB microsoft sidewinder stick

the problem is that i cant seem to calibrate it correctly

the roll is fine, but pich is very "jerky"

If i pull genly back on the stick, nothing happens right away, but when i pull abit harder it suddenly reacts with a jerky movement in the correct direction. If i start pulling back fairly hard it responds promptly and correct.

This is highly annoying, cause it makes it hard to fine tune my aim.

I have tried adjusting the deadband and damping, but it doesnt seem to help untill i set it so hard that its useless

any ideas?

I never could get my MS ppro smooth.  I ended up replacing it with a saitek cyborg. All you can do is fiddle with the scaling, unless your stick is getting real worn or has some damage internally.

I use a MS Precision Pro 2 and have no probs with it.  Try reducing the size of the deadband.  I can send my stick scaling config if you like...

I found nose bounce excessive with a ppro (2 sticks.. one old one brand new) which i could never solve due to the stick's short throw.  Scaling can reduce the effect but I was never able to reduce it enough...

I have the same joystick and have no problems.  The effect you mentioned only occurs when I am disengaging auto-level with my joystick.  But in regular flight it's fine.

If you're using the Sidewinder software; don't forget you can set the deadband in two places; within AH (as you know); and within the Sidewinder software (which most forget). Open up the profile; and click on the "settings" tab.

Additionaly; I found using the sidewinder software increased nose bounce; and with AH's stick mapper you don't need to use it. While it's true that you lose the "shift" button functionality without the Sidewinder software; you can get it back by designating the shift button to switch between stick sets (profiles) within the AH stick set up. Actually; you can have four stick sets; which out does the side winder software.

As a general rule; you want the dead band as small as possible. Keep reducing it until your plane has difficulty holding auto pilot. That jump in response you see is the sudden jump from 0% travel (dead band) to maybe 5% travel (as you move the stick out of the dead band range). Scaling your stick reponse helps this too.

You can download it for free from Microsoft; but as I said; I honestly think you're better off without it.

sounds like internal damage or dirty, I had that problem once (office stick)and it was optical damage, another time I just took it apart and cleaned it and it has worked (my home stick) an been goin strong for 2 yrs now.
