Yeager's Last Sonic Boom
« on: August 28, 2002, 08:32:14 AM »
Its a week-old news blurb, but I don't remember seeing it covered here already.  Those going to Edwards AFB for the airshow in October are in for a special treat.

=================

YEAGER'S FINAL SONIC BOOM? Brig. Gen. Chuck Yeager has been flying military aircraft since the 1940s, but during a visit last week to Edwards Air Force Base in California, he hinted he might be ready to give it up.  "Sixty years is long enough for me to be flying military airplanes," he said.  Yeager will break the sound barrier in an F-15 Eagle at Edwards' 2002 Open House and Air Show on October 26.  He told the Air Force News he's not planning to give up flying altogether.  He'll still fly P-51 Mustangs and various light aircraft.

Its interesting, he used to get sick all the time (air sickness) early in his flying career apparently...the ground crew hated cleaning the oxy mask, as Yeager would have urpped alittle inside it..he eventually conquered his airsickness.

Reminds me of Admiral Nelson..of Spanish Armada infamy.  He would get sea-sick everytime he sailed apparently.

What version of history did you study!!!? :D

Nelson defeated the joint French-Spanish fleet at Trafalgar and also the French fleet at the Battle of the Nile.

It was Sir Francis Drake who defeated the Spanish Armada.

Obviously Curval meant the other Admiral Nelson! ;)

I saw the Edwards Air show in 1997. Yeagar not only flew an F-15 past the sound barrier, (50th anniversary),  they raffled off a ride in the Eagle with him.

I REALLY wanted to win that one.

Yeah, this one, the same guy that helped save the world from the brink of disaster many times during the '60s while commanding the submarine "Seaview" ....

Yeager said before he was going to turn in his license and give up flying voluntarily. This was when Hoover was being persecuted by the FAA and had his license pulled. Yeager said he wasn't going to wait and have his license pulled by anyone else. He then conveniently changed his mind and continued to fly. In an interview by a GA style flying magazine Yeager also said flying for fun was "stupid".
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

I remember my last sonic boom.  It came the morning after jalapeno poppers and a fifth of tequilla.
