Best quote so far from the baseball mess.
« on: August 30, 2002, 09:57:59 AM »
"The fans were getting on the Rockies pretty good," Giants first baseman J.T. Snow said. "When they made a few errors, they started chanting, 'Go on strike.' They were upset with Zeile after he made his errors. They see players as being greedy. That's not the way it is."

uh huh.  The major issue is the luxury tax for teams over a certain threshold in 40 man roster salaries.  The union is against this because it will "slow down the increase in player salaries" and in Fehr's words "it's tantamount to a salary cap."

If that's not greed, I don't know what is.  It's one thing for someone to strike to get better wages when they're making less than they should be making.  It's another thing to go on strike to get a couple of extra million per year.

sheesh.

You know, baseball hasnt been the same since the last strike.

NASCAR and Football are quickly filling in the gaps baseball once had.

I guess my opinion is like many here in the office...who cares?  The season is almost done anyways...if they go on strike, I'd view it as a nail in the coffin of baseball as we knew it.

Hmm, since these guys are "professionals", can we sue em for malpractice when they error?  :p

The Anaheim fans throwing balls back on the field was pretty funny.  I hope they strike, I'd rather watch world league football or hell even arena football anyway.

Baseball is great....to PLAY YOURSELVES. Some pals.. a cooler full of sandwiches and beer and a nice summer afternoon.. what is better? COMPLETELY different from paying thru the nose for overpriced beer and snacks, parking, getting searched when you try and enter the ballpark, the drunk guy behind you ralphing up his 8 dollar beer, and all to watch a field of ridiculously overpaid  whiners fight and argue over a GAME. 'America's Pastime'.. shhhhheya.. if you mean arguing , whining and brawling.. maybe.

You nailed it Hawk.

All sports are just getting stupid with the amount they pay the players...

There are few sports where players deserved to get paid a lot of money...

Baseball is not one of them...
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

I have not seen a Pro Football game since the strike in the early 90's(?).

I have not seen a Pro Baseball game since then either.

It isn't sports anymore, it's about greed,....and they are not making any attempt to make it sound like anything else.

I watched the city of Arlington spend millions of dollars building the Rangers a brand new stadium, while the schools still have asbestos ceiling tiles in them.  Pathetic does not begin to cover what a messed up set of priorities we have.

I think Hawk did pretty well to state my sentiments.  I wish I had the time to join a league though.  Basically, I just don't find football and baseball to be as entertaining as their cost.  I can find a much better time with my family of four at a movie and it ends up being cheaper, better seats, more action and no crazy traffic afterwards getting out.  Or we go to the water park, or the pizza place with batting cages and arcades or I use that $100+ to buy something for the home.  I personally think sports is starting to price themselves out of their entertainment value and at some point there may be a nasty backlash and things may come crumbling down with a few teams folding up or whatever.  I see maybe one pro game per year.  Heck, Aces High is just $15 per month.  That's bang for your buck!

The news last night had an interesting story. They found that the average  family of 4 paid about $150.00 to see the diamondbacks in Phoenix play. IMO that is about $125.00 too freaking much.

Anyone who thinks that pro "sports" is about anything but greed is likely to be too stupid to live without full time supervision. IMO it's rediculous to pay anywhere this kind of money to people to play a childrens game, pretend to be something their not (ie actor) or play "music".
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."
