In WinXP, AH seems to eat tons of memory..
« on: August 19, 2002, 07:17:31 PM »
I have WinXP Pro and am running a fairly modern system:
EPoX KT333 mobo
1Gb of PC2700 CL2
GF2 MX <-weak link

Anyway,
My problem is this, when I [ALT TAB] out to look at something outside of AH, nothing loads - or at least it loads EXCEPTIONALLY slow...  I'd like some ideas on what to tweak to allow me to better utilize my resources..

Bigmax,
Same here, too.  I just launched and Alt Tabbed out .  Free memory dropped ony 5% or 50MB. Doesn't seem like much to lose when ya stil have 760 MB free but everything is slow.

Same here.

However; I've not had many of the infamous CTD's.

Here's a pure supposition:

AH may have a mem leak; XP's mem mangement is good enough to hold on (albeit AH takes all you've got); Win 9X systems can't hold on (very different memory management) and crash. But that's a WAG on my part.

I have CTD'd on a few occasions... Not frequently, but every now and then.  Usually after I've been flying awhile..

BigMax everything loads slow because AH uses up 100% of your CPU resources. Nothing to do with memory.

It hasn't done it with any other OS.  I've run 98SE & 2K. Never had an issue with those.

Can you explain further?

It's not AH hogging memory, it's AH hogging the CPU.  When you alt tab, It's like the game continues to render in the background.

Okay,
So why didn't it do it with Win98SE and 800Mhz processor?  My current system is twice as fast with a state of the art MoBo?  Only difference is WinXP Pro.

As far as power goes... My system is new.  I bought an Antec SX-635 case, the 350Watt power supply & case is one of the highest rated cases @ a reasonable price.  Also, I only run a NIC and a Video Card (GF2).  Shouldn't be that either.

Still need help!

AH is using 100% of the avaialble resources....  makes everything else super slow... Is there a way that it can be manually limited?

TY for all the info so far !
