9 GIAP fielded 16 pilots to mount one of the squads favourite rides the Typhoon.
There was a little confusion at the start which has been gone over so many times it doesn't bear mentioning again. We launched successfully from A43 carrying 500lb bombs and crossed the channel at medium altitude at reduced throttle to preserve fuel. GA and his Vikings swept ahead and above us to ensure a peaceful crossing. We were ordered to position ourselves so as to be ready for late targetting.
With Normandy in sight we received orders to hit A7 field. Well 16 tiffs vs a small undefended airfield is a bit one sided and in less than 30 seconds it was a smoking ruin. We lost an aircraft, maybe to ack, but reviewing film, it was probably to bomb blast as he passed low over a hangar.
We reserved some ordinance in case we were required to attack A3 as well. Climbing out we received orders to go to A3 for air to air work. We disposed of our remaining bombs on targets of opportunity (the beach defences at A7). We climbed initially north to gain altitude. Fate and a group of 190's intervened at this time. About 4 of them got through the Vikings and got amongst us while we were forming up.
We are claiming 3 of them killed for the loss of one our aircraft. We lost another airframe when a pilot chose to bail for personal reasons. At this time A3 was captured and we received a RTB order. One pilot was leaking oil and was ordered to recover to A3 if he could. His engine gave out close to the field and he was not able to land there.
We lost another aircraft on the return journey due to fuel starvation. We lost a final aircraft in a landing mishap due to rough terrain on the field when he put down just off the strip.
We achieved our mission objectives and more.

Thanks to the Vikings for their excellent cover work. Thanks to ammo and all the cm's who put so much of their own unpaid time and effort into providing entertainment for us who are too often ungrateful.
