But Kieran, it’s the perfect right wing deal.. you can plant these chips in infants and when they get older you can scoop em’ up before they commit a crime.

Imagine if every person were implanted with a GPS device at birth. Imagine we develop the technology to keep a retrevable data base that can pinpoint the exact location of an individual at any given time during their lifetime. Imagine that this data could be cross referenced to reveal the identities of all other individuals at the same location at that perticular time. Actually we aren't that far away from having the ability to do this now, but imagine if everyone were equipped with this device.

Serial crime would become obsolete. By cross referencing the location of the victim we'd know who was present at the crime scene and, even more importantly, where they are right now. Police work would be much easier if an alibi could be checked on a squad car computer by referencing a suspect's previous locations. We could solve previously hard to solve crimes like hit and run, arson and burgulary simply by cross referencing the location of a crime with those that have been there.

We aren't far away from having the potential to do this. Based upon the general good to society a concept like mandatory GPS implants would provide does this seem like a path we should pursue? I'm undecided myself, but what if we used this technology to solve crimes and civil disputes by requiring the implantation of every American? Good idea or bad idea?

Bad idea. The crimes might be solved, but the crimes would still happen. A better solution would be to kill everyone. Then we can guarantee crime wouldn't happen anymore.

Imagi ne installing these chips at birth. Imagine the government realizing its potential. Imangine the government being unwilling to deactivate the chips at 18, even if they say they have.

The usual argument of 'if you are a law abiding citizen, you do not have to worry' simply is a straw man argument.

I do NOT want the government to be able to track me. They do not have the right to know where I am at what moment in time.

Republicans should fight this tooth and nail - it goes against everything related to the freedom and privacy of the individual - and offers 'protection' and 'safety', which in reality is just 'governemnt ability to control subjects'.

Many here are fond of the saying 'he who prefers safety over freedom deserves neiither' (paraphrasing). If it isn't relevant here, I dunno where it is relevant.

So where are the freedom fighters? Not many words from them yet. Most seems content with it being a ood law enforcement tool (as would keeping the subjects locked up in cells and only let out to work).

Why is this a bad idea? For argument's sake let's suppose there's safeguards in place that pinpointing ones whereabouts is done in the event you are either the victim- or the perprator- of a crime. Wouldn't you want law enforcement to have this technology to solve the crime? If not- then why not? After all, we allow other forms of clandistine police surveillance such as infared detectors to detect indoor pot gardens or listening devices to hear your conversations without warrant, and I'd feel more violated if the authorities used these presently legal tatics than if they had the ability to tie me to a crime scene as either a victim, witness or perpertrator. Are our whereabouts a private matter when we're in a public place?

Most children are kidnapped by their parent who doesn't have legal custody of them, not some stranger on the street. It might be better if we start putting chips in the parents.

Anyone here devorced and have children from the previous marrage? If you don't have sole custody, I suggest you sign up for being "chipped" right away.

As a policing tool this chip would rock. However, isn't there an underlying assuption of guilt?

I wouldn't trust ANY government with this type of information. To much potiential for abuse.

If the chips work as advertised, they'll sell like hotcakes

I'd consider one for my kids if they were younger, my wife would definitely chip me if I were in my early 20's

I'd be more for chipping the criminals and pervs first. Right after the trial at which they are found guilty - ZAP - in goes the chip. Hypo them right there in the courtroom. May even serve as a deterent of sorts - imagine that.
