I know that a number of you fly the hogs regularly, so here is a question for you:  Are the flight models of the -1D and -1C variants really the same?  It seems to me that the -1C feels more nimble and less prone to burning energy when maneuvering than the -1D, but maybe it's just my imagination.  Perhaps I just feel better about a plane when I'm sitting behind four cannons, as opposed to six mgs.  :)

I havent done any tests but the -1C does just about everything better than a -1D IMO.

The only difference should be the cannon Vs. gun according to the specs.

They both had the P&W R-2800 -8(W) engine that put out 2250 hp. They also weighed in at 8900 lbs empty and 14000 lbs fully loaded give or take a few.

It just seems to be a better ride overall.

I find the -D much more forgiving than the -C, and I "think" the C is heavier.  Anyway... thats my opinion.

The C HAD a weight problem, it was very much underweight which made it much better then it was. It is fixed now I believe so they should behave more or less the same.

The -D holds E better and turns better. It has less of a stall to the left wing as well.

The difference is noticable if you fly the -D a lot and grab a -C. But if you fly the -C a lot and fly the -D you will only notice the lack of cannons and not the more forgivness of the -D. Just the way a mind percieves things.


And yes the -C wieghs more, not positive but I think it is somewhere around 600lbs more.

The C-hog is now 300lbs heavier than the D and this is accurate.  Before it was corrected the AH C-hog was some 300lbs lighter than the D, so it was a whopping 600lbs too light.

It's kind of funny that the F4U-1C is now heavier than the F4U-1D. I'm pretty sure I'm the one that gave Pyro the chart the F4U-1C weight chart that showed it as being heavier.

Now looking in the 1944 Fighter Conferance the weight of the F4U-1C is only 11,800LBS. 300LBS lighter than the D-hog.

This also corresponds to the F4U-4C(20Mil) being lighter than the F4U-4 with 6 .50 cals by approx 300LBS.

Now I'm not so sure.

To me the C seems to be a more stable (firm) aircraft. Easier to land- especially on CVs.

Just my pref..I like it more
