Please, lose the UDP to TCP switch.
« on: September 18, 2002, 01:51:06 PM »
This thing is killing me! I haven't had a CTD since the last patch, but I'm making up for it in lockups due to...whatever.

All I know is, I get that horrid orange switch message then pow!...locked up.

I'm on cable, average in the mid 50's ping time and minimal, if any, packet loss.

Note: I never had a connection issue with AH beginning with beta until the route was changed a few months ago, then the protocol was tweaked.

Yep I'm unable to participate in the game due to this.  I'll keep paying my subscription in hopes of a fix, but how much longer?

I was under the impression that the switch to TCP happens whenever UDP is lost, in an attempt to stay connected.

If this is true, then it implies that losing the UDP/TCP switch will result in an instant disco whenever UDP is lost, rather than an attempt to stay connected with TCP ... i.e. MORE discos, not less.

Can anyone confirm/deny?

Nothing has changed since then.

Apache, there are two possibilities I can see.:
One is your network card, the UDP lost session to TCP followed by a hard lockup indicates  there may be a hardware failure, driver failure, or some sort of software failure on the windows network layers. Do you run any personal firewall software?

Second is your cable hookup itself. The best way to describe cable is to compare it with a network hub vs a network switch. A cable segment is like a neighbourhood LAN. Other users on the segment can have a massive effect on your connectivity. If possible run a tracert with a package like visualroute or pingplotter. However, don't use the standard settings, change the packet size to 1024 bytes, and set it to 1000 iterations and see if over a long period of time (30 mins) there are any unusual network hits.

One last possibility, is if your aren't running a firewall of any type is some cretin on your segment running DoS attacks.]

In HTCs defense, I run AH from NZ, without any problems. I used to have a Celeron 1Ghz GF2 system, I recently upgraded to board and CPU to go to Athlon 2100XP GF3 system, neither had any major problems with recent iterations of AH (apart from the Ki67 CTDs).

No, but the UDP/TCP switch is _still_ not the problem, nor will it become the problem.  It's a symptom.

We've been through that before  :D

(I always do this to people with a dead straight face; I occasioannly forget that doesn't work as well on the boards.  Sorry if I sounded more annoying than I intended :) )

what Vulvcan said : check all your hardware

I'm currently playing from a 3rd world country (... France) with a 56modem which cannot connect over 33K because of the lousy phone line quality and except that I suck I've no problem...

Straffo, your problem is deeper, much deeper... :D

That TCP switch seems a bit too sensitive to me too, because If I log back in, I'm good for another 30 minutes or so again.
