Its time to Buff the charts
« on: September 19, 2002, 04:11:15 AM »
After a prolonged abstinence Ive been around for a couple of weeks to try out the new features. Must say I love the new buff system, bombing is now more of an artform!

However, I have some small requests.
As I understand it the main goal was to make buffs more of an area-effect thing. This is excellent, the targets we are trying to hit are, however very small. The typical AH town has an estimated population of 100-300 inddividuals I´d guess. Not much compared to Hamburg, London, Warsaw etc.

If U go for airfield devestation U still have to hit tiny objects like FH´s, BH´s, VH etc to get any effect.

In both cases its no problem if you are lucky and dont have to adjust your flight path at the end of the bombrun, however from time to time I find myself, despite hard efforts, forced to do these adjustments and hence miss totally or get a very limited effect.

So what do I want? One of the most important crewmen in a bomber was the (much to overlooked) navigator. If I only got some kind of easy to use, very crude navigation tools everything would be daisy. Im talking about beeing able to draw a line on the map so I can get a more acurate bearing to target etc. (Been doing this with a paper thus far, but it leaves uggly finger marks on my screen.)
I believe this could compensate for still having to pinpoint very small targets (not very realistic) with a more crude (realistic)sytem.

Also I sometimes wonder about the area effect. During one of my first runs I dropped a nice row of bombs between three hangars, the bombs hit exactly where intended, but not a single object was destroyed despite my devestating 18000 Ib payload, just a nice row of craters between three intact hangars. (1 hour of flying, very frustrating...) I real life this would have caused a lot of damage anyway, a runway in desperate need of atention before use, some killed/wounded personel, destroyed vehicles and airplanes etc. (Including a devestating amount of underwear laundry clogging the logisticsystem totally...)

Is the areaeffect underestimated??? Or should airfields be more vulnerable in other areas than we can hit today??

Thats my thoughts, what do you think?

And btw, with the excellent buffsystem its a shame I dont have more buffs to play with. I would love more of the historically important bombers, like the Heinkel He-111 or even Dornier Do17 as well as the Wellington.

I agree. So far I`ve used any straight edged piece of paper, pen, diary etc.etc. To attempt to draw a straight line to the target.:D
Result: One very smudged and dirty screen.

Bombing is dependant on accurate navigation. Not accurate. Not on target.

I also thought that the bomb sight took into consideration "Wind drift" Apparently not !!

I don`t know what the answer is.. Only know it would help a lot.
