I'd recommend keeping the tracers on for awhile, especially against the drones. Get a good feel for the trajectory of the bullets. Then turn them off and see how you do. Personally I keep the tracers off. My aim sucks either way but it just makes for cooler effect, especially when strafing :)

If Fatty's not around, try this:

***Get really close.  Like 50 yds.

***On some shots I use the zoom, but never even close to all the way zoomed in.  With difficult 90 degree deflection shots on bombers, zoom usually doesn't help because it restricts the field of view too much.

***Don't use tracers on a fighter, except when practicing off-line.

***Sometimes the time to fire is when you can't see the enemy plane because it's hidden by the your plane's nose.  This is especially true when you're very close and both turning hard.

***Make sure your rudder is centered when you fire.  However, there are some shots, particulartly head-ons, in which stomping hard on the rudder as they go by will get you a kill.

***My convergences are set around 250 for most wing-mounted guns.

***When I think of anything else, I'll post it.

***It's a lot easier to hit stuff if your plane if properly trimmed.

Try turning your tracers off -  this helped my gunnery 100%.

Also - try a fighter armed primarily with MG's rather that cannon - they are easier to hit with and more consistant.

The 190 you are flying is perhaps the worst weapons platform in the game... I enjoy flying the A5 but with speedy 7.92mm MGs and slow-as-molases 20mm's aiming can be difficult.  Your two sets of guns are being fired at different velocities and thus meeting the area of your intended target at different points.

Oh, and yes I use zoom.

Pick one plane and stick with it for a while. Practice offline on the drones with tracers off.

some zoom in ur view doesn't hurt

you don't want to zoom in too close as it gets real jumpy then

practice until you can hit a shot from dead behind...then practice until you can hit a 30º deflection shot...then a 60º deflection shot...then a 90º deflection shot.  Its all in the practice.  I wouldnt use zoom if I were you.

Use the .targetXXX command and shoot at it and get an idea of how your bullet patterns hit at diffrent distances. Set your conv at 200 and then check your target @ .target200

Then check the target at .target250

and so on and so on just to get an idea of how your bullets drop at diffrent distances and the dispersion also.

Learning how to lead a target just comes with time.

I have read a lot of knowledge from others above, and I am surely going to try to make use of it.

I must say however, that I learned by trial and error in actual combat.  At first I tried to get dogfights in the training area, but very few would play along, so i just started shooting down everything that was flying there! lol.  Thats a jerk thing to do really, so I wouldnt suggest it.

I set my convergence way different than most people.  I have no joystick, which means my mouse makes flying real difficult.  The plane constantly oversteers in every direction, but now for some reason I am able to control the plane with the best of the pilots I have flown with and against...but still have trouble keeping a bead on an opponent at short distance.  Therefore, I have set my convergence to 1000 - I have shot down enemys at 1600 with this setting.  I get more kills from long distance for some reason.

Just another thing for you to think about.

An alternative to zoom.

I read a post in this thread by Gryffin right before loggin on in the MA tonight.  He's suggests that you hold down the num-8 key, (which is the "view forward" key) and moving yourself all the way forward, then saving that head position.  So, when you get in close to the enemy, you sort of slide in towards your gunsight by pressing num-8.  This is different from zoom in so far as, well, it doesn't zoom.  Your FOV is about the same, but the gunsight is enlarged and easier to read.  Anyway, it worked well for me tonight.

I forgot about this. it is useful becuase it shows you exactly how much your bullets drop.  It's worth doing at least once.  You can set .target to any range you want syntax is of course .target (whatever range you want - zero to turn it off again)   You will see a target I think due north.

Uhmmm.. I'm FAR from being a shooting expert, but this has helped me lately:

I'm using zoom (default zoom) when firing tracking shots. the idea behind this (in my small brain) is that when you're not using zoom, you don't have the same size/ratio compared to real life perspective. Default zoom is closer to this, and thus... helps me calculate the lead needed.

I think.

Use zoom when you shoot.

Fly same plane till you will be confortable with gunning. Then you can jump to other plane.

Go offline, go up, shoot dummies. Go straight to their 6, then attack with deflection, then bounce them. You may want to set your ammo high to have more time to practise.
