Its on the truck in my town!!!
« on: September 25, 2002, 11:46:00 AM »
My new system is almost here! Just checked the tracking number!
on its was loaded on the truck at 8:16am here in my town!
;)
Im gonna run home and see if it there durring my lunch!
lol I might just get sick and not make it back for the rest of the day if it is!:D

but any one got any advice on setting up these Newer Athlon based systems?

Xp 2200
Asus A7VX8  Via KT400
onboard sound and LAN
512 mg of Corsair 3200 C2.5 DDR
using old HD (WD 20 gig 7200) and video card (Gefore 2 Gts 32 mg for now)

Running Win XP

Another Question is :
my old board had a Via chip set too(newest 4-1 drivers)
Will my set up work if i just replace these components ?
or am i asking for trouble?

I just dont want to have to reset everything up(XP and all the other programs + DLing all that stuff)

Hell i dont know if it will work or if its even worth a try !

I bet XP would go nuts if you changed the hardware out without formatting and starting over from scratch. I know Win98SE did not like going from one motherboard to another even if it had the same "chipset" maker.

This one is probably the same way since you are probably taking a pretty good jump up in chipsets to the newest Via out there. So I would bet that you are going to have to format or risk some pretty weird things happening with the system.

I'd start fresh

Run out, spend $100 on another HD

Put it in as master, old as slave

Re-install your OS & programs and drop and drag your data from old drive to new

well i just realized im gonna have to get a new video card too!
it has to be a 1.5volt card verses a 3.3 volt card and my old one is 3.3volt !!
so were looking at another $150 on a video card then another 100 on a hard drive!
@#*&*@@*!!!

i ran home at lunch and picked it up hoping i could at least get toejam set up on it!

oh well back to the drawing board!

At least you asked first buddy.

When I was working in sales and repair at a computer shop a few years ago we had a guy come in that had bought all the high end hardware at the time. I think he had a P2-400 on one of the high dollar ASUS P2B boards and SCSI Hard Drive (I think it was 2 Seagate 9GB Barracuda's) and 2 Canopus Pure 3D Voodoo2 cards in SLI with the first AGP card Canopus put out (I think it was a VooDoo Banshee chipset). Anyway he came in saying he could not get Quake2 installed. Well when I started up the machine it just came up to a DOS prompt with the floppy drive. The guy had bought a copy of Win98SE at the time and did not install it. He thought all he had to do was buy the license and all hard drives were pre-installed with an operating system. Also it turns out that when he started up the machine he had fried both of his VooDoo2 cards somehow. Anyway I put it together for him and charged him $200 for my time plus a replacement charge for the parts. It only took about an hour but it got him out of our hair for a long time.

You said it Ripster!!!!!!!!!!!(or as karaya would say RIPFART)

The biggest squeak that i have to deal with is if im gonna buy a hard drive I want to buy a Serial ATA drive but there not out yet!
Atleast ild buy a Maxitor ultra ATA133 i did see a couple of those listed places fro less than a $100....

Well i have to get the video card for sure !!
so im thinking that i can save all the stuff i want on my second drive then wipe and redo my better drive ! but man i hate resetting ever sweet thing back up all those updates all the damn down loads! not to mention getting the damn LAN connection to work with COMCAST's crappy system!  (i dont have there crap on disk)  well looks like i might just put off the actual assembly till tomorrow (my girl is cumming over tonight) but either way im stopping by BEST BUY on my way home !

1 thing i allways hate about building a new system  THE UNEXPECTED HASSLES

lol well this thing will be RAGING soon guys so check your  6's cause it might be me sitting behind that smoke fast machine......

think hard about the maxtor, I have one of thier ata133 60 gb. It adds nothing over ata100 and the maxtors seem a bit flakey. I had to return my first one. If I did it again I would go with a good ata100 drive instead.

All is well!

i got home and said f@ck it to buying new stuff and figured i give it a try !!!

Put it all together and every thing booted fine!
Xp reloaded all the drivers needed and i was off and running.

Old Hard drive is fine and Video card is working well too!

only real problem i had was getting the onboard LAN to work.....turns out in my own stupidity i didnt have the darn plug in all the way!

Only things i have to do is turn some of the case light connectors around so they work properly, and do some fine tunning and tweaking!

GAWD what a lucky son - of - a - squeak i am!

TY and to all the addvice guys!

;:) ;) :D

Old system died two weeks ago new puter arrived Tuesday.

Forty B-Day present.  6 times faster than old system.

This one is loaded with XP Home on a P4 2.0, GeForce4 MX, 40 Gig

Got the cable modem issues resloved last night.

Does anyone have any or know where I can find the tweaks for XP to improve  AH's performance , I have not worked with XP before.

Thanks in advance for any help..

For reference, a GeForce 2 card is not what Asus cryptically refers to as a "3.3V card."  What Asus (and other manufacturers) should have said is uses 3.3V signaling vs 1.5 V signaling.  A card using 1.5V signalling is AGP 4x compliant, thus any AGP 4x compliant card will work fine (except for the 3Dfx voodoo line, which claimed AGP 4x support, but didn't really support it).

(Edit:  Spelled signaling wrong.  I think I need more sleep... 14 hour work days really wear you out mentally. )
