Battle of the Ruhr Frame 2 AAR(s)

9 GIAP

I had the honour to serve as planner for the defense of the Fatherland for this frame.  Much happened as was forseen.  One notable thing - the quality and discipline of the efforts of the scout P51's in keeping us low.  Well done

GIAP got airborne a22 and proceeded to cap area.  Nice formation generally.  Our forward scouts did the job and did it well.  Identified formation, told us its makeup, its altitude, its heading all that could be asked of them.  They then brought us right to them.  Well done scouts!  Excellent job.

The plan was to use the 262's to panic the the escort just as we attacked.  Problem was there was a magnificent job done on us by the RAF scouts!  No panic there!  Credit where its due.  Those p51's just kept us down to about 20k all the time.  Every time i got up to about 23k - zip in they come and its roll over and dive and turn and then back at 19k again.  Very  tough decision then.  Do we run away or meet the buffs?

As we managed to get co-alt I decided to attack.  It was obvious that we were out gunned by about 4 to 1.  Our only chance was a HO pass dive extend and run.   I picked up E and sat just behind Kisters.  As 2 p47's came to his 6 I pinged them.  Kind of expected them to fall apart but nothing does for me at the moment. I saw 2 P47's diving on me - dodged one but second took off outer wing panel so I bailed.    A few of the lads got to the buffs and the 30mm did some damage.

At the same time - another group of buffs was down south and I had to send the other squads to meet them.  So no support was immediately available for us.  It was good to see we had some survivors initially but the P47's were obviously peeved about losing so many of there charges.  They hunted us and we lost all but one plane eventually.

The southern groups managed to kill their buffs.  The escorts killed most of them though and I only had about 3 people left to throw into the battle and they seemed to be carrying damage.

I was fairly happy at this point because we had only lost a fighter hangar to bombing the all of a sudden i am told that A18 is hit!  Only minutes before it had almost no damage.  A fresh group of Lancs had just hit it.  The LW solo jet found the lancs and removed two of their number before returning home.

About 11 buffs and 3 fighters were claimed by us with many others damaged.  Film will reveal if we have exaggerated that.

We lost 13 of our own.  About even numbers.  Not too shabby under the circumstances we found ourselves in re numbers and altitiude etc.  Lufwaffe aircraft definitely make you work harder.

To Bikekil Flossy and the CM's
To RAF - that was in no way a boring TOD!!
to all who took part - thankyou  :)

can confirm that 308's objective was to bring the fight down below the bombers ingressing into the 20/18 zone..................

880 was high cap over them

63rd escorted Mag33 from the south

418 escorted  Air Maggedon (who killed A20 FH) from the north

The skies were cleared for the Wings of Death to go over A18  from the west with 7 formations of Lancs each with 14,000llbs (total 294,000llbs) just on A18 FH................

We saw one enemy 262 on egress who took out one of our lanc formations all the rest RTB'd although some drones landed short of the runway.

No. 418 RCAF was assigned to scort Air Maggedons B17's to A20. The bombers could not climb above 18K prior to the attack so P47's were assigned from 22 to 30K.

We were discovered early by a scout 262. The FW190's arrived shortly after. I have to salute the 190's. They were outnumbered and had no alt advantage to work with. I believe they all died but they did manage to kill some buffs and damage many other. My apologies to Rotty :)

The remaining B17's rtb'd - one 418 P47 was lost while the remainder rtb'd with many kills.

Thanks to all and especially the CM's. TOD is so enjoyable :D

Thanks, Bikekil and all participants.  Can't believe how smoothly everything went.... everyone got themselves organised into squads as far as possible, or notified me of those who couldn't due to lack of anyone with invite privileges.... would-be walkons accepted it was a pre-registered squad event and left quietly.... nobody (as far as I know!) complained about settings.... and there were only a few discos.  If only they were all like that!  :D

Btw. big the the frame CO's. I saw only Allied orders and they were just perfect. Judging from the AAR's Axis orders were perfect too! that's why we all enjoyed this frame :-)

We (5 pilots) were assigned to take off from A21 and be close CAP support for A18-A20.  Reaching about 20K and getting into the target area, we spotted hi dots 2 groups of 4.  Closer Identification revealed they were 8 P51's.  The P51's charged us, and we were forced to turn north and drop alt to disengage.  We regained alt north of A20 to about 25K, and turned back south, as we saw the P51's were east of us.  We hoped we could intercept any bombers entering the area, however, the P51's gave chase.  We dived slowly south, and it appeared that for a moment the P51's again let us go.  However, a few stayed with us.

So, I ordered our guys to the deck, and we proceeded to tangle with them then, as 3 of them followed us.  We claimed 3 I believe, however, more P51's kept coming down, and we had to try to disengage to refuel, to no avail.  We eventually were all destroyed.  The fight on the deck took place between A18 and A20.

Would like to know which allied squad we tangled with? they were P51B's.

fun frame

to you kronos. The 8 P51Bs was the 308 RAF :D.

I was one of the 2nd section that attacked you after you shot down our first section.

From my AAR in squad forum:
...
The problem for us (blue section) was, that we lost visual contact to you guys down there. I think this was caused by the terrain or my flu.  Circling at 25kft we decided to go down for you guys. But we came too late and all of you were dead. We lost one in dive down by over-g :(. Lucky for us, the 5 190s were at low alt and we came with plenty of energy down to them. I made several BnZ passes on them and got 4 of them. We did really good IMO. I didn't saw a single 190 even firing at me.
After all 190s were down, sev and me grabbed alt again and patroled A18 area (SW). Then we met the Lancasters with cover dropping on A18. It looked like a success. We turned back to England and met a Me262 at our way home. Me262 shot down 2 Lancs and I got on his tail to about 400yards. The P51B was shaking hard and near to fall apart so I had the break off the attack. (who was it?)

We landed save at A4.

The 190s did great, because they stayed close together and dragged first section low, but with strict BnZ they had IMO no chance against our high E P51s section.

to your 190s kronos

hehe it's 308 you are asking about Kronos :-)

We spoted Me262 and he was trying to scare us... but we kept going our way so he gaved up :D THen we spoted 2 enemy squads... o passed on the right and another one was your 190's i think... i ordered to stay hi and do not dive after you... then we disengaged and proceed to A20, but one of our sections reported you following so i decided to attack.. we turned on you and ... we lost one of ours in the dive ;) and then we took the fight... i called 2nd section for help, but a bit too late... you finished us and then they finished you :D

guys! i had great fun with you there... till i died ;)

I shot down two from the first section, but as the second section came down we were down to 3 pilots and were out of options. The A8 is like a pig when its slow on the deck.

308 for your discipline and skill :)
