Liking it for the moment...kinda sentimental to the game because of all those LAN nights at school ;)

I've eyed that box many times....is it worth it?  I mean I liked that and Command & Conquer....I loved the late night LAN parties we had here too..going home the following day mumbling "Yes, me lord" and such  :)

In some ways it's better in others it's not.

If you liked the old game it will be worth the money.

Did they do anything to make it a little more strategic and a little less blitzkrieg styled?  I really got bored with on-line play quickly due to the advantages gained by just making one type of soldier and flooding the other player with them mentality.

I liked the Warcraft series and played it online but it becomes boring fast. There is no strategy just mine gold and chop tree's so you can build troops as fast as possible and rush the other side. It's good for a quite LAN or net game bu don't expect anything too 'deep' it's RTS in it's most basic form.

DJV, the do have the 'hero' character and that will stop the rushing somewhat.  once you build your 'temple' or whatever it's called for your race, you can get 1 free hero character who has different spells/abilitys.

for instance on the human side you can get a magician who can bring down an ice storm over an area.  you can get him very early on  and if they send a wave of lightweight melee type units at you you can wipe out them out fairly easy.

also these hero units get stronger with kills (simular to a D&D, tye thing but much simpler).

anyway it is lots of fun so far, and I'd recomend playing through the campaign before you go online. it gives you good familiarity with all the units of all the races.

I played Warcraft 2..enjoyed it, but probably overplayed it and I'm not too thrilled about 3.

But, due to connection teething problems (ADSL) due to really bad wire I decided to buy an offline boxed game to have something to play while the problem is fixed.

On Swoop's recommendation I chose Medieval Total War.  Glad I did.  Gonna have fun with it...still learning, but it won't take long.

I'm having a blast with War3 multiplayer.
Its more strategic and the hero feature is great.

If you were WC2 fan, you'll like WC3 too.

Rush is still present, even AI is nasty using it. Humans seem to have nastiest rush, followed by Night Elf huntresses.

Hero characters can repell attacks, but heroes can also be rushed.

A smart approach is to fit your hero with few grunts and send him out to fight and gather experience. At higher experience levels he is worth like small army. The so called creeping is fighting neutral units and bandints. Your hero gains experience, as well as gathers items (potions, magic rings, spells etc).

Was playing orcs, a mixture of shamans and taurens seems to be great melee force. A witch doctor for healing and there you go.

In short, a fun game.
