What exactly needs to be done to make the map of the terrain appear on the clipboard in-game instead of the default?

When you are done with your map, go to

File -> Make Map (choose the settings you want) -> ok

Now go to the folder of your map. Lets say you called your map desert. Go to C:\program files\HTC\aheditor\terrains\desert (this is assuming you installed it with default directorys. In this folder you will see a file called map.bmp, this is the clipboard map. Open this up, and convert it to a 256 colors BMP (personally, I use IrFan View, becuase there is no quality loss from 24 bit -> 256 colors.) Save it as 256 colors. Now, rename your clipboard map to the name of your map, so in this case, call it desert.bmp. Now open up the TE, open your map, and in the bottom right, you will see your clipboard map. If you see this, you did everythign right, and you can go to file -> build, and your map will be made with the clipboard map as the map that comes up when you hit the "Esc," key.
