Change to H2H menu?
« on: October 07, 2002, 06:47:12 PM »
Well, after having to cancel my online account temporarily (I'll be back soon!) I have had to put up with H2H.  I feel that often times, the host is messing around with the settings to their advantage.  Things like ammo loadout, fuel burn, and especially lethality.

A thought.

If a host is using anything other than MA settings, is it possible to note that on their "room"?  Or flag the ones that are using MA settings?  That way, one would know before even going into a H2H room if it's porked or not.  Before you entered a room, you would see the ones using MA settings in green, or something like that.  Nothing major.

I think it would give the people who are looking for an honest review of Aces High, but passed on their two week trial (I did, not sure how), or even those who didn't choose to have an account at the time, but maybe want to revisit Aces High, a possibility of reviewing the game under MA settings without guessing if the particular room "feels" right or not.

A lot going on in H2H i wouldn't be too proud of, but not sure how to control it either.  I think this would be a positive way to provide some control, and still provide all the benefits of H2H it currently enjoys.  Heck, every now and then, it's fun to have an unlimited ammo load (I take up a hurricane IIc), or sometimes it would be fun to design your own terrain, and try it out (especially with the new ability to skin most objects, including planes).  H2H is a good thing, but I think this could make the experience better.

My $.02

H2H causing ill formed opinions about the online game?

The H2H is a totally different world from what we know in on-line environment. They have their own set of "rules", own set of "compromises" and own set of "consesnus" on how the game should be played.

As much as the usual on-line AH gamer has his own opinions about H2H folk, the H2H folks have their own opinion about on-line folk... and its not always friendly. Particularly this becomes an issue when the talk comes to "skill levels".

Anyhow, most of the H2H games are usually a fast-paced action arenas with unlimited ammo, unlimited fuel and exterior views. Spraying is not uncommon, and all sorts of "gaming the game" is possible in those rooms. (Like, using airshow smoke as a evasive tactic.. it drops the frame rates drastically for people aiming at the smokey arse)

But as it is, they don't pay anything, so I guess they have no obligations to follow the "basics" of on-line environment.

Grease, fly in Saubaros's arena, or Wolfgng's. SauboroS has MA settings and Wlhgng has a great looking terrain with lots of canyons to crash in.

Perhaps a tab in the h2h arena selection screen which shows the h2h settings like gamespy etc

S!

h2h settings preview&view window would be very very nice.

Also current icon settings should be host settings too.
Friendly Icons Only is really blast! :)

Easiest way to get MA settings is to host your own room. If you want just to fly around and not be bothered set # or people to 1.

While HT does continue to support the free h2h, I don't know if what you request would be high on the fix list.

a good idea IMO:

if the host changes settings in-game have a pop-up or text message stating what changed as it happens.

If I'm hosting a room I tell the players what's coming before I do it.

I guess these thoughts have been provoked by this AGW thread?

I don't think this really has anything to do with H2H but more the players making those types of comments have no intention of giving AH a fair go or come over and try it with their heads full of pre-conceived thoughts on the sim anyway. It also seems one person in particular in that thread has a huge axe to grind with HTC judging from other's recollections of his past time spent in AH.

Why these online sims have to be turned into some crazy religion I don't know. I sometimes wonder if these players would be more willing to cheat on their partner's than to try the 'other' sim.

Yeah, I was trying to think of a simple add on that may close a loophole for more misinformation.  Someone from WB may have unintentionally poked around in a H2H room where the settings were porked, for whatever reason, and thought that they were experiencing the game as it was intended by HTC.

H2H is not a representation of the online game as intended by HTC, but rather a game created by a host using tools given them by HTC.  I would not like to see someone give Aces High what they feel is an honest shot, but find everyone flying with airshow smoke on, unlimited ammo, and wind set to 127 mph.  I would walk away from that in 5 sorties (or whatever it was) also, with a bad taste in my mouth, if I didn't understand that it was not normal game settings.

Plus, it sounds like this would be appreciated by many in the H2H community.  A lot would like to know they are in an arena set up like one of the online arenas.  Also, a lot are looking for an arcade experience, and they would know not to go into an arena set up as one of the online arenas.

That's $.04 now.
