My comp won't boot :(
« on: October 13, 2002, 02:53:12 PM »
It doesn't seem to detect my IDE drives, meaning that i end up getting a boot error and it won't start up

besides the obvious FDISK'ing and reinstalling windows, would there be anyway to get it starting?

And if i can't get it started, would there be a way to rescue any of the data on my hard disk?

More sys info plz, like you runnin raid, cpu, etc.

If hd's are fine then no, you don't need to kill the data on it.

There are companies who specialize in data retreival from DOA hd's, but they are expensive. So if ya need them guess the data would have to be mission critical.

make sure the jumpers on your HD are correct ...
some HD's if you use the "master" setting and theres only 1HD will give an error..
make sure you have the jumper set for "single" or "cable select" and that it is on the right connector of the cable
I don't know what to put here yet.

yeah it'll boot from a floppy, says it can't detect a FAT or FAT32 patition.

i think the boot sector might have become corrupt?

well its been working for almost a year, so i doubt that could be it (and no one's been monkeying about in my case)

sys specs,
amd durron
20 gig hd (not sure on make)
6 gig (not sure on make of that either)
128 mb + 256 mb RAM sticks
soltek 75-kav mother board

BIOS doesn't detect either of my hard drives, so could it be a problem with my BIOS?

Btw, this problem might have occured because of a DAP version i downloaded last month, which seems to have a problem with the auto-shut down computer feature which i think gave me the blue screen of death. It did this the last time i used the auto-shut down, for some reason i didn't remember that at 6 am (I'll kick myself if thats what happened)
Anyone heard anything about this?

Bios doesnt find the ide's?

Does it find your optical drives?

 Try clearing cmos

If it's just not booting to hd try:
Boot off os cd go to E:\winxx  type fdisk/mbr

unfortunatly all i've got is a master disk (why the heck do they give us them instead of the real things anyway?)
but i'll try it

if by optical drives you mean CD drives, yes

and what exactly does that command do, cos i DO want the data if possible

And would those data retreival guys care about all the porn on my disk?

That command does not kill the data, it rebuilds the Master Boot record.

Make sure your C: drive is present in system. You can check this out by going into FDISK and just veiwing the drives. Should show as disk1. If it's there then go back to prompt and type fdisk/mbr.

This is all dependant on the system seeing both hd's C: and D:
