Flying a 109 missing a wingtip
« on: October 13, 2002, 09:57:06 AM »
Is it possible to land a 109 missing a wingtip?  Even with aileron trim all the way opposite and rudder trim all the way opposite, the plane won't get into a level attitude below about 350 mph.  The nose drops and won't come level if you try to get the wings straight, and if you just try to fly crooked, the nose drops anyway.

I've landed 190s without wingtips, they aren't exactly easy but it isn't impossible either.

Thats the trick in many planes, slowing down enough to drop flaps without hitting the ground.

Try stalling the 109 in a climb. Deploy flaps and recover. Worked for me (wrecked the gear while landing though - got a ditch) :)

one of the reasons this trick is so easy in the P47 is because the flaps can be deployed at very high speeds

yes urchin

opp aileron and rudder trim, full up on elevator trim and full opp rudder. You will fly almost sides. Dont use a lot of stick just get the stick in a spot that keep you in controlled flight.

You will lose speed rapidly and unless you are right at an airfield you wont get home.

Use you throttle to control your decent and belly land without flaps.

Do not open you gear.

Well, P47's are easy to land with missing wingtips. 190's too. F4u's are fairly easy to fight in with missing wingtips ;)

The 109 is very hard to land with missing tip, VERY hard, barely possible.

Depends on which wingtip.  If I'm flying the 109G6 it's not extremely hard to land it with the right wingtip missing.  It's been my experience that it IS impossible to land it if the left wingtip if missing simply because of the torque.  On landing your nose should be cockeyed a little bit.  Firewall the throttle for a second or two to get the nose straight and then set her down.  Timing is the key.

its *impossible" to land a spit9 without a wingtip though.  B ut yes, the corsair and the P-47 are very easy to land without a wingtip.

I fly planes with missing wings. I bank 90 degrees so side with the missing wing is facing up and then I use the Rudder to control the altitude. ;)

Bf109 is pretty much impossible. The spit doesnt seem to do well either. The 190, F4U, Hellcat, Niki, Hurricane, P47... and so on can do fine and are very easy. When I was doing a bit of chog dweebing a long time ago I wouldnt even bother to rtb when I lost a wingtip, the damn thing flew almost the same and I had many sorties with 4-5 more kills after I lost the wing. :D

You can do it in Bf109, but it is very hard.
Try to find balance between speed and throttle, sometimes you can even try to balance it by using throttle.
The torque is quite hard with 109.

I believe that hasn't changed since last time I flew tipless 109.. (which I lost in too greedy attack against B26 formation :>)

Once I did land C.202 or 205 without wingtips, it was constantly going around and around by the torque, but was controllable when gliding..  got bored of it after a while and then decided to roll back home at 100mph. :D
I don't remember if I had also rudder broke
