The French are rude and they hurt the feelings of the rest of the world, so its natural that we mock their cowardice, even if its undeserved.

Vive Le France!

I think back to the Canadian snipers in Afghanistan.  Exemplerary duty recognized by all that served around them... except their own government.  Canada did not like the idea of commending their soldiers for killing the enemy.

The idea of a nation being a bunch of pacifists does not come from the behavior/reputation of their soldiers.  It comes from the behavior/reputation of their government.

Other than that...

The French have bungled dang near every military operation from 1915 to 1954.  Even at Dien Ben Phu, when the paratroopers were dropping in to help lift the siege, everyone knew it was a hopeless situation.

Here's a pretty good webpage for the Normandie-Niemen:
http://www.mediares.fr/niemen/index.htm

Couldn't read a lot of it, but it's got a lot of nice photos. About 3 or 4 pages of 'em.

Amazing book.  I've read it twice.  I would also recomend his book, "Street Without Joy" for a wider view of the Indo-China War.

Also read Laterguy's "Centurians" and "Preatorians" for a look at the results of the Legion's defeat at Dien Bien Phu.  Such as the fighting in Algeria against Muslims and their attempted coup against DeGaulle.

My French is really bad...I'll take a crack at this:

Name of God.

But where is this thing that you (cache?)

Go back to (voler?) I am mine next to make of P47 with you.

On second thought my French is worse than I thought.

it translates loosely to

"i surrender and so does my P47"

but something may have been lost in the translation.

Ya know it's kind of ironic that the book I mentioned ends with a French surrender.

For sure the history of French military operations has some low points, down there with the Germans and the other "Washington Generals of the History Channel".

But I just want people to know about the bravery of French soldiers, which many seem to be unaware of.
