Question about bombs and lift?
« on: November 09, 2001, 12:53:00 PM »
Today i got excited and ran home for lunch to jump online for a shortie.
I jumped into a p-38 with 2 eggs and 10 rockets. I took off and was in the air for about 3 minutes when i saw a fellow pilot with a boggie on his 6. so i droped my bombs and shot off all my rockets and went to help my fellow pilot.

What i noticed was my plane acted the same as if i still had the bombs and rockets still on.

Does the plane physics change when you drop your bombs?

I thought it did but after today i just dont know?

The plane physics definitely change for me.  If I have a bomb on one wing only it is REAL noticeable.  Also you can feel the weight and inertia of ordnance effecting weight and inertia.  Dutch roll and spins can get really funky on planes carrying wing bombs.

is it possible to snap a wing off if you have one bomb on the wing and you do a roll at high speeds?

fuel and bombs and rockets definitely affect the way your plane handles.  If you really wanna see differences, go offline and take a DHog off the deck with 25% fuel, and then with 100% fuel, and then with 100% fuel, 2000lbs of bombs and rockets.   :)  You'll see a difference.

Ok gonna ask an AH newbie question here.
May not be the best place to ask but since we are talking about the level of realism here I figure what the heck :-P

In AW they had Relaxed Realism arenas (which I hated) and Full Realism.
As I have yet to go online to fly (waiting on getting my joystick replaced) I don't know how the arena(s) are setup here.
Does AH do mostly FR or are its arenas closer to RR?

It's all FR, Awulf, but the jump isn't as steep as it would be to AW's FR.

just so i have this right..if your plane is carrying a load of bombs/rockets then your plane weighs heavyer in flight.

But if you start off with 2 1k bombs then while mid flight you drop the 2 1k bombs does your plane get lighter? or does it stay the same weight as if it was carrying the bombs?

Because when i droped my bombs to go after the boggie my plane still acted like it had bombs. ( there maybe other affects but i was just woundering)

Chaos,

I notice quite a difference after dropping 2 1K bombs in a P51.  You notice difference when you take off, and when they are dropped.

I would say, yes it's lighter when you drop the bombs.

Take off with bombs, drop them as soon as you are at a safe alt, then land and taxi onto the rearm pad.  Wait 30 seconds and when you get rearmed, you'll notice the landing gear compress from the weight of the bombs.

Also, remember that the operational weight of the P-38 was over 16,000 lbs., over 18,000 lbs. with 2k of bombs.  So, when you drop your bombs, the weight only decreases by about 10 percent.  A change that you'll notice, but maybe not as dramatically as you expect.

"maybe not as dramatically as you expect."

Escpecially if you're slow. The faster you go  in that P-38 the more you would notice the loss of the ordinance.

I would also suggest that if you are new here you may not be as sensitive to the feel of the aircraft yet.  I can sure tell the difference between an F4U at 25% fuel and 100%...a real pig when fueled up.

Also: Rockets slow a Tiffi way down. Whats bad is that the rails still slow ya down even after you launched the rocks. At least it usta.

I definately notice a difference while carrying the external stores with the P-38L before and after dropping them.  Getting rid of them is almost a relief, like getting a huge load off of ones back.  Mind you, the P-38L handles its ordinance better than any other fighter due to wing area and total engine/prop power.

Lizard3,

Yes, it still does.  The rails that the British aircraft use have that disadvantage. I've stopped using the rockets on the Mossie because of that. The bombs leave you clean once you've droped them.
