Whats the best way to add weather effects to a skin? I have tried a few things, but it always comes out looking pretty werid

. I use Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and GIMP. Thanks for any help!

I've attached a small part of the martlet skin I just finished in Photoshop format, You'll have to let me know if it opens OK, I only use PaintShopPro.

Once I've got a nice clean aircraft with all my panel lines and markings on I use a 7 pixel round brush with the opacity set to 1, white for highlights, black for shadow. Make multiple passes to increase darkness. Play with brighness and contrast as well as opacity for the weathing layer to get the desired effect.

I also use a few shades of brown and grey but they're no so important. I also sometimes go over the whole skin with a large black brush on a new layer just to dirty the whole thing up a bit.

Finally, put the original skin as the background layer, you can check where the highlights fall on the original and keep your similar. Generally as a rule of thumb I put highlights on the leading edge of panels and lowlights on the trailing.

Any specifics other than what I just wrote I can help with?

i use photoshop 7 and just make a new layer make a few dark 1 pixel dots near where i want it then u use the blur tool and drag it till i like it and with the exaust i use the burn tool sometimes to add a burned effect

ty gatso! So far I have this, it's a Ju88 I am making of 2./Lg.2 who operated out of N. Africa. One wing has the effects I added, the other doesn't (so you can see the difference. Any comments? suggestions? Ty for your help!

Starting to look good

A few Q's and comments. This is what I'd do not neccesarily what you should do.

What method are you using to blend you layers? It's hard to explain and it's personal preference so if you like em leave em, but your panel lines look a bit yellow. With 1024x1024 skins I use a 2 pixel wide anti-aliased black line on a normal blended layer with 15-25% opacity. (like this)

What size/res is the skin your working on? (all sizes I give are for working on 1024x1024 so you'll have to scale down for 256x256, should have mentioned that before)

Carefull on adding random weathering, I like the lightness you've got on the mid panel highlights. BUT careful on how you place them, I usually orient them with airflow and don't overlap them. ask yourself what is causing the damage to the paint and place them accordingly.

I also neglected to mention in my previous post, I turn the hardness way down when doing this stuff. These are my brush settings.

Weathered wing looks much better than the unweathered one. Keep going
