If your actually starting to build a field or HQ or what ever when you open your TE the program will close.

You need to make a map first then work on that map.

This is for first time users of the Editor

1) Start the Editor
2) Go to File ( upper left corner of screen )
3) Goto New
4) A box pops open... Make up a name you want to call your terrain ( no longer than 8 characters in length )
5) Click Open
6) A box pops open with Select map size ( all terrain maps are 512 x 512 miles..... this is just perspective view for the clipboard map )
7) Choose 64, 128, 256 or 512
8) Click Ok
9) Goto File
10) Exit
11 ) A box pops open with " ****** has changed.  Do you wish to save? "
12) Click yes
13) Start Editor
14) Click File
15) Open
16) A Open Terrain box pops open
17) Double click your terrain name folder ( or highlite your terrain folder and click open )
18) Double click your terrain name .oba file ( or highlite your terrain .oba file and click open )
19) Now you can start doing stuff in the editor

I noticed the latest build of the editor will give you an error if any of your tiles are not 8-bit. Before if you forgot to convert your tile back from 24-bit it would show up black in the map, now you get an error and the TE won't even open.

My maps will open even if i have no fields or HQ's set, so I think this may be his problem.

I downloaded the terrain editor yesterday. I have been playing with it since then ( a number of hours including making a bmp of the map I want to make.

I have been working with the tutorial open, following all it's instructions to the letter.

Now...the first problem I have is that it doesn't show the bmp I created to use for a map. Only the gridlines with the numbers. I did as it said then transfered the bmp map to the folder I created.

It also says something about a current terrain .cfg file that is suppose to reside in the settings folder of the ahedit folder. That settings folder and file do not exist. I even created the settings folder and deleted my terrain folder, went through the process again. Still no go.

I guess my question is...was the help file tutorial for a previous version and not applicable to this one? Most of the stuff seems to work fine, but the main glitch I have found is that I can't get the map I drew to show up.

Any help is appreciated. I can generaly find my way around software by clicking on stuff to see what happens but this one I decided to follow the instructions by the letter. Not having much luck.

You need to change the Clipboard map to 8-bit, and rename it the same name as the map.

Ok, I already had a 8 bit bmp, it was the naming convention that got me. Now...I guess it only shows up in the little map down on the left, not in the main terrain editor window, right?

This Editor is not that much different than version 2.00, other than being able to save Shape Textures, dealing with Zones and importing and exporting.

Not having the curterr.cfg file is not that big of a deal.
Just that if you are constantly working on 1 terrain it can save you from opening up your terrain everytime you start the editor.

1) Make a settings folder and place it in your C:\Program Files\HTC\aheditor dir.
2) Start the Editor and open the terrain you are working on.
3) Shut down the Editor
4) Start the Editor, now you will automatically be at the terrain that you were last working on.

To save your Clipboard map do as Nuttz said and name it to the name of the terrain you are working on ( MyTerrainName.BMP ) and place it in the texsrc folder ( make it if you don't have one...C:\Program Files\HTC\aheditor\terrains\MyTerrName\texsrc )

It must also be set to 256 colors

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. I know you guys answer a ton of questions and i know how tiresome that can get.

One more though :)

Not being much of an artist, can you point me in the direction of some tile textures that I can download and use. BTW I also fly Microsoft FS2k2 and it has a lot of textures in there that can be used with various scenery programs available (of which I have three). Can those terrain textures be used in ahedit?
