Do you know what Bursitis is?
« on: October 21, 2002, 02:48:18 AM »
..and how can it be reduced quick?

Fell pretty hard on my right elbow tonight in my hockey game. I don't wear elbow pads anymore because they got in the way. Got to work feeling sore but here I am almost 9 hours later and I look down and there is a huge knob jutting out of my elbow. :(

Any information is appreciated. I have 3 games this week, then 2 next week and playoffs the week after.

it isnt?

My older brother seemed to think it was, but I'm all ears

We don't have team doctor, although we do have some sort of doc on the team now that I remember right. I'll have to wait till Tuesday night to see him though.

All I want to do at this point is stick a needle in my arm to let all the fluid in there out. I know it's the last thing I should do but i'm going nuts with the stiffness. :(

Bursitis (sp?) is an inflamation of the bursa, part of the shoulder. If I remember correctly.

what i've read is that bursa tissue is around every major joint and the fluid it produces to keep those joints 'oiled' is what has made my elbow look like it has a golfball underneath it.

supposedly continued bruising to one area will cause this, and well i've been falling on my elbows since i stopped using the pads about 6 months ago

class, repeat after me: i'm a stupid idiot!

I had the same sort of injury WITH elbow pads on.

What you have done is ruptured the Bursa sac in your elbow.  Over time your body will absorb the excess fluid and it will go down.  For now all you can do is ice it and rest it.

Bursitis is a condition where over prolonged injuries or "wear and tear" the bursa sacs in your joint(s) have taken a beating.  Your joints feel stiff and sore when kneeling, bending etc.  I don't think there is anything that can everse the conditon so to avoid it put your damn elbow pads on you cuddlinghunkassin.

Dummy, wear your elbow pads, I'm a coach and demand that all my players wear them.  I still have bone frags in my elbow for playing with out them.

Let's see:

1. Obtain diagnosis from older brother. Check.

2. Get opinion from flight sim BBS. Check.

hmmm, let me think, what's the next step?

Oh I remember ... see a doctor!

Seriously Moose, there are a lot of things this can be. If it's not back to normal real quick, I would get it looked at.

Got it in my ankle once from running cross country, not very fun.  Offhand, I'd say you're not to going to enjoy those 3 games this week, or the two next week, and if you're lucky and don't keep banging it on the ice, it might be back to normal in time for the playoffs, but that's not even a guarantee.  I'm with myelo, go see a doc.

Bursitis is typically attributed to overuse or improper form while doing some sort of work/exercise/sports movement. From what it sounds like you may have ruptured one of the bursa within your elbow or you may have cracked the bone in the elbow.

This comes from long years of school where you learn about the various injuries you can sustain with sports and exercise activity. I studied Exercise Science in college when I thought I was going to go to Physical Therapy school. Now I am headed by for my Masters in Exercise Physiology and going to Nursing school.

I've had alot of joint injurys over the years. mostly knee's and elbows ( HS football, horses, mororcycles, work injuries).  bet to a Dr to see if he can do anything.  once the Dr.s have done all they can try those suplaments with glocousamine & condroitin (sp?).

while awaiting surgery on my wrist and elbow a couple years back the surgeon recomended I start taking those to improve cartlige growth and healing in the joint.  after taking them for several months I noticed the pain in my knees that I'd had for over 15 years, was much less.

before taking these I had to take 4-8 asprin just to get out of bed in the morning and I hurt to some degree all day, every day. also before taking them I could run about 50 yds in an emergency and expect my right knee to swell to double size for a couple days.  now I can run about 3 times that far before I get pain and the swelling isn't near as bad, and goes down in 24 hours.

they don't seem to work right away, and it's real gradual (I probably would have gave up on them if they hadn't been part of my pre-op instructions). but the effect adds up over time.  if you quit taking them you won't notice any bad effect right away but over a month or so the pain gradually comes back.

anyway I don't know what effect it has imediatly after an injury, but for anybody with longterm joint pain this stuff is great.  if any of you decide to try it, give it a couple months before you give-up on it,  the effect comes on very slow so its easy to decide it doesn't work, but every one I know who stuck with it for at least 2 months loves the stuff.

I have a bursitis in my sholder from playing british bulldog in the army. As far as I know it applies only to the sholder and it has no swelling attributed to it. I just couldnt move my hand when it was really bad and couldnt feel pins in my hand untill it got treated wich took 6 months of physio.
Motrin took all the sympoms of my bursitis away though and thats what my army docs gave me to get me through my last 3 months of field work in the army. But when I went off that stuff...yowser.

Still acts up in weather changes 13 years later.

edit
I meant to say there was no external swelling, the bursery or what ever is swollen..but you cant see it. I thought I had hurt my hand fighting or using a pick on rock. Never even suspected the zinger I got on my shoulder.
