Dago - thanks for that info. Always wondered why it really was called a goon - other than for the reasons I gave!

Shane - yes, drunks in WB too.

ccvi - you are right. The field in WB had to be closed for capture, in which case the enemy could not spawn. What was your WB handle?

Yes, I'm sure they were. They seemed like kids with a very short attention span. Too many junk snacks and soda pop, not enough fresh juice and wholesome food.

BTW, I see you're in Stamford. I used to go there often. Many Churches, and that natural yellow stone that runs right down to the Cotswolds. Fondest memory - my Dad's 75th at the George Hotel. A wonderful evening.

Yeah was similar in AW.... A field had to have 60% of all structures destroyed before the field itself was destroyed and the fact broadcast by the System. It would then remain "dead" for 30 minutes which was the time we had to successfully the goon(s) in - originally one carrying 8 "drunks", but latterly two with fields requiring 12 "drunks" for a successful capture. Those 30 minutes were often a tense period as the time counted down -occasionally a succesful capture was immediately reversed as the enemies recaptured their field. One difference was the troops only had to land on the field.... no maprooms involved.

I was just parked at the enemy city 20 ft from map room in my M3. Everything was down except the farm. My gun was out from a prior pass by an nme plane. A dozen friendly planes were in area- some flew directly over the farm. I called about 8 times on range and friendly radio for someone to strafe the farm. We would have had the field in seconds if they did. I sat there and kept calling for about 10 minutes. Nada. Zip. Zilch. I was the invisible man. Finally an enemy panzer slowly pulled to within 100 yds of me and blew me away.

Goon drivers are the Rodney Dangerfields of AH- they get absolutely no respect at all. No one even listens to them.

It's just one of those things you have to get used to and live with. In effect: lower your expectations.

Ok I think I understand it.

During preflight these twelve guys are in the hanger pounding shots..

You load them all into this plane that has no guns...

And fly to a field that is being attacked..

It flys slow, it has no guns, and your in injun territory.

Once you get there, your countrymen are too busy shooting enemy planes to defend you...

So if I show up drunk, in a plane with guns, your pretty much defenseless..

And if I shoot the plane down ?? I kill 12 intoxicated people riding in back TOO ??????
