He will appoint his replacement.. I am not sure about the election though. Unlike when Carnihan went down late election (and his wife took over), it looks like the Senators family all died with him.

very sad indeed.

Very sad :(

What does this do to the Senate now?  I mean until the time that Ventura appoints the next one?  Republican control or Democrat?

not the way I wanted the Senate to change hands....

All the Senators family didnt die, only his wife and one daughter were with him. He had at least a couple sons, though I am not sure of the complete makeup of his family.

The following is a note I sent to my squadmates about this tragic incident:

As you all probably know, the news is reporting that Sen Paul Wellstone from Minnesota died in an airplane crash. I live in Minnesota, and I never voted for Wellstone.  I didn't agree with his views, he was far to liberal for me, but I can tell you this, he was probably one of the most decent and honorable persons in Congress.  He brought true feeling and concern to his job and stuck to his beliefs in the face of incredible pressure and ridicule.  Its sad that a good man is gone.  Sen Wellstone was up for relection this year, his competitor may well win now, it was a close race.  I dont like his competitor because he is too Republican for me,  he will rubber stamp
anything the administration wants without concern to the working people, the environment or our futures.

I can't understand why there aren't more politicians who really are middle of the road, honest, and understand how to strike a balance using good judgement, honest and integrity to guide them.

Maybe Jesse could appoint himself... that could be interesting, and he needs a job soon anyway...

Any such appointment would be valid until the closest election - November 5th. The senator elected will take office immediately not waiting for the regular date in January.
So Jesse could play a senator for a week. Or give republicans a senate majority for a week.

Well, with a bunch of super-intellectuals like we have in the MOL, we of course cover topics of concern and interest to the literate elite.  :)

Actually, we just occasionally swap a note or two about news topics.

the senate is in recess now so it don't matter. dems can pick a new canadate or let his name stay on ballot but they don't have much time.
Min law says they must pick a new one no latter than 3 days before nov 2
if wellstone is elected , ventura will appoint a new senator.
ventura has said he is done with politics and will not appoint himself.
i think the demos will pick a "name " democrat to replace wellstone. some one like mondell etc or one of wellstones sons. whoever the dems pick will get a 'sympathy" vote and could win
