How do you think the Rank system in the new Arena will work?
« on: October 26, 2002, 01:39:37 AM »
Some squaddies and I were talking about the new Mission Based Arena. I thought I read somwhere that the reward system is going to be a ranking system. Am I correct in guessing that this would be a military rank system (2ND Lieu., 1ST Lieu., Captain so forth and so on.)?

If that is the case and lets say you get up to Captain after some successful missions, and then you royaly screw the pooch and you die in a mission. Do you think you would get to keep your Captains rank, yet have all your stats as a Captain 0'd out, or would you get totally reset? Whats your guess?

Jebo, you death will not reset your rank, though every death will have a big penalty (probably slowing down your next promotion and medal award).

I hope that the Mission Arena rewards successful completion of mission objectives and the survival of mission participants more than it penalizes players for individual death.

This would go a long way in preventing the sort of unrealistic behavior that spares one's life at the expense of fellow teammates.  "Chumming" and/or leaving fellow players to the enemies while one makes an escape would be discouraged in this context.

This is from the 1.11 teaser that HT posted on the News forum awhile ago.

Quote
Scoring is completely different with a heavy emphasis placed on achieving mission objectives and survival.
With success, you will earn career points that will translate to rank promotions. Stats such as kills, strikes,
etc., will be streak based and reset upon death. Your personal best streak will be saved in its own category
and not reset. Ranks and medals are also not reset upon death, but death will carry a large penalty, and may
even penalize other members of your flight. In earning career points, succeeding in your mission objective is of
paramount importance. If your mission is to protect a group of bombers, than their survival, along with that of
your own flight, will dictate the success or failure of your mission.

It looks like the problem that Leviathn mentioned would be discouraged by the scoring/ranking system in the upcoming MT arena.

HiTech also mentioned punishment for not follwing the chain of command. I'm not sure how its going to work, but it does seem he's got a good RPG factor in mind-> "Obey your wingleader, try to keep it historical and fun, stay organized, and work your way up the career"

ps) It'd be interesting if there was also a "leadership" rank... great pilots are only few, and they will be required to lead the lessers in rank and skill as a team. There should be a system which rewards the wing or the squadron where more members survive AND accomplish the mission, in contrast to those where only one super-pilot survives by abandoning all his squad/wingmen for personal scores.

I believe that anyone who calls themselves "major" in a thread will be laughed at just as much after the "missun" arena as before.

I think that death penalty shall be high, much higher than reward for completed mission. I would prefer a death as a total finish of career, but they already said it will be other way. Death shall be scary for players, or mission arena has not much sence (at least for me).

I am sure that with any plan some medals and some ranks shall be EXTREMELY hard to achive, or getting them fast will kill motivation to play more.

I am sure, that every role (fighter, attacker, bomber) shall have its own "life". So I can switch to buff without putting my fighter carrier under threat, and then switch to fighters again.

I'm not really bothered how it will work so long as the arena offers a viable place where strategy and teamwork mean something.

i'm guessing becoming a POW will also carry a large penalty

time for SAR planes i think, possibly the risk factor (how far in enemy territory, how active fighters are, etc.) could effect how many points you get for rescuing pilots

although we'll also have to have 'capture' teams too (points for that as well, depending on rank maybe???)

couldn't be that hard to program:D

roflmao

none of this is 'ripped off'

these ideas have been going around the community since the beginning. just because htc is going to implement something similar to what another game has (or..um..almost has) isn't bad.

definitely not ripped from CRS. maybe ripped from thousands of message board and newsgroup posts asking for such a thing...

Are you talking about how you get rank or the mission theatre?  When i had a 2 week freebie at ww2ol i didn't see anything resembling a mission theatre.  If you you mean about rank- isn't it logical that if you achieve rank with success in mission?

I've no idea what you are talking about.

Something like it's elder brother-
Wing tips rounded, spinner's bigger.
Unbraced tailplane ends it's figure.
One-O-nine F is it's name-
F is for futile, not for fame."
