Internet Explorer Home Page Won't Reset
« on: October 07, 2002, 01:19:36 PM »
Hi all,

At a friend's house in ATL and helping him with some minor computer stuff.

He's got a problem with IE 6.0 / SP1. Some bank he was dealing with online managed to insert THEIR homepage into IE as the default.

I've tried to change it several times and even d/l'd the MS Service Pack but no matter what I do it keeps reinserting the bank page every time you open IE.

Tried AD-Aware and that found a bunch of stuff but wiping them out didn't help.

Suggestions?

Thanks again in advance!

Well, when I got the Notification message saying that I could d/l IE 6.0 I asked our IT guy if I should go ahead.  He said "For heaven's sake, don't install that POS.  Major bugs."

Get rid of IE 6.0 and get an older 5.X version...if that is possible.

try deleting cookies, you should be able to just type in whatever homepage you want, maybe try blank.

 in IE

tools
internet options, then mess with the stuff in there

What's the website?  Perhaps some of us who enjoy a challenge could deliberately put ourselves in the same situation, solve the problem on our machines, then post a fix for you...  ?

It would be easier then trying to debug this through two intermediaries.

Chariboy:

Here's what appears in the address bar now and it always shows "page not found". It's basically a link to nowhere but it won't allow us to change it. It always comes back when you reopen Explorer.

Skurj,

It is an XP OS. Will go check that site.

Skurj, it won't let me change anything in the top half of the page they suggest in the tweak. It's all grayed out.

Blank doesn't work. No matter what you put in, the next time you open IE it comes back with the line I posted.

May have to delete cookies I guess.

Simple,
Open regedit  (start-->run-->regedit
Ctrl-F
type the name of the webpage that is opening in IE.
every instance of it change to what you want...

Or

open IE --> Tools --> internet Options

On the general tab you should see a place to enter a websites name. apply --> OK

Start:Run

Type regedit.exe

Navigate to:

HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

Do any of the sub keys have scmb.com in them?  If so, post the name of the specific key and one of us will tell you what it should be.

For instance, if it's a key called "Start Page" then the default value should be something like:

http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd={SUB_PRD}&clcid={SUB_CLSID}&pver={SUB_PVER}&ar=home

Maybe other websites too, but here is a place for one of you that wants a challenge to see what this is really doing to our systems.  I accessed this page and was asked if I wanted to download a plug in, I said no, but it appears that going to the page was enough.  At one point I even had several icons on my desktop.  All leading to absolutely nowhere.  When I was hit with it, it changes your homepage automatically (as previously detailed by others) but you might look at your favorites files too.  In IE6 all my favorites FOLDERS now point to a scmb page, that no longer exists.  I also ran a genral text search for scmb on my hard drive, and without the .com it shows up in a lot of files.  So watch what you delete.
