Win XP and CH problems
« on: November 09, 2002, 09:04:30 PM »
Just did a reformat (Installed XP for the first time) and have come to find out XP does not like my CH Combat stick.  Gave me a message the system might stop working if I installed the drivers so I opted not to.  Now I can’t even get it to try to install the CH drivers. Not much on the CH site that is of any help. It is an old analog stick with pedals which worked great prior and served me well for over 3 years.  The stick is listed in the game controllers, but when I select it and choose "add" it does nothing.

Will not be flying tonight or this long weekend from the looks of it. :(

Suggestions?

That box will always come up if you try to install non MS rated drivers. Just hit ok to install them. If there is a problem, you can always go back to a checkpoint or uninstall them manually. There shouldn't be any problems with those drivers tho.

CH has a blurb on their site about what works and doesn't work for their analog setups in XP. You can't program the sticks in XP, but windows will see them as joysticks that you can use in AH.

CH USB setups work fine in xp (and other window os's).

Thanks Star, problem is now when I went to the control panel, game controllers and added the CH Combat stick the first time it came up with the "error" message so I choose not to install. Now every time I go back to add the CH Combat stick in the game controllers I am able to select it and click on add, but the nothing happens. It just goes back to a blank game controller window. :(

I have tried several time to add the CH Combat stick, but each time now it goes back to the game controller window where it should have been added, but the window is blank. Just as if I would have hit cancel and not tried to add any sticks at all.

Hey Harppa! :D

Well I did just that and it works great, but it is really just one hat with an additional four way button. I tried both 6 button with one POV and 6 button with two POV's (and throttle of course) but in AH I have lost the use of the lower hat (looks like a hat but it is really a 4 way button).  :(

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the CH drivers but for what ever reason XP will not allow me to "add" the CH Combat stick.  :(

Does the lower hat work in Windows Game Controllers setup ?
If it does, then you can make some adjustments in AH Setup/ Stick mapping :)

I also suggest you try CH WinXP drivers, which you can download here:

Thanks harppa!

I had already installed the drivers you suggested. Several times over now. I have Uninstalled anything to do with CH and rebooted reinstalled 3 times over.  Still will not let me add the CH Combat stick.

Yup the lower hat works in the windows game controller setup (using the 6 button 2 POV's with throttle generic stick) just fine.  Top hat gives me "red" arrows and the lower hat gives me "blue" arrows, but when I go into AH in the joystick setup the lower hat does nothing.  It is as if it does not recognize I even have one. I can't even assign anything to it because it does not activate any thing at all. Dead button in AH. :( I have lost 8 of my views in AH without it. :(

- wish I had my Combat stick here, I could test it myself, but  I lent it to Wilbuz last summer and he still has it .
As I recall there was no problem using it under XP earlier this year...
Have you tried older drivers for the stick, the ones made for Win95/98 ?

Had that exact setup for years now (CH combatstick gameport + Pro rudder), used it with win xp for 6 months without problems.  I have never used the CH-drivers, because they caused problems when i first tried to install them in win2k.  Was very difficult to clean those out of the registry, and they caused all kinds of problems.

I have always used the "6-button joystick with two POV's and throttle" setup, and made sure "Rudder" was hooked off.  That setup has always been great - all buttons work, hardly ever had to recalibrate.  Setup has been with me for at least 3 reinstalls of win2k and 2 reinstalls of XP - never had any of your problems.
My humble advice is: stay away from ch-drivers and delete all files and registry references to it.  There is nothing to gain by installing them.

On a side note, my CH combatstick "died" recently after 5+ years of exceptional service.  It was my own fault (thinkering inside), and i'm now waiting for my new CH usb-setup  :D
